    Hi,
We had a screensaver on our previous computer which was running Windows 98SE which used the Fat32 file system.

Is there any way to use this screen saver on a computer running Windows XP which has the NTFS file system?

Our daughter has our old computer and we tried to copy the screensaver and then install it on our new computer but it will not work.

    Thanks

What's the screen saver? Was it part of a theme? Animated? Some of these require additional files besides the *.scr file.

Any errors when you tried it?

    Hi goddez1,
    Thanks for the reply.
It was a Halloween screen saver titled "Dangerous Creatures ". It had a .scr and a .dll file which I copied.
It was animated. I believe it came with Windows 98SE, Microsoft Plus.

A theme named "Dangerous Creatures "! That kinda' complicates things for me. I was going to go fetch the theme for you but plus' theme with the same name is an animal theme with a tiger wallpaper, animal icons and sounds.

Can't know why your having a problem with this older theme. It could be a few things such as it used more driver/files, it needs to be in certain specific named folder.

Did you try using the "compatibility mode" option as suggested?

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/gethelp/appcompat.asp

I tried right clicking on an *.scr file but didn't have a "Compatibilty Tab ". Guess this tab is only for certain extentions [file types]. So I opened the wizard as instructed by the above link and browse to the *.scr and followed instructions. It seemed to work, but this was not an accurate test since the screen saver worked in the first place. Figured I'd send the nfo on anyway.

A work around is just going and finding a new Halloween theme:

    http://halloweenwallpapers.ezthemes.com/pcenhance/dt/spotlight.phtml?halloween

There's lots of free cute Halloween themes here. Perhaps a similar theme can be found.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you manage to get this squared away. Booooohhhh! :D

If I put the .scr and .dll file in the windows folder (where other screen savers are), it will show up on the list of screen savers in the display window. If I select it here and then click "Preview" my computer screen just goes black for a few seconds then goes back to normal.
This same thing happens if I double click on the .scr file no matter where it is located.

Some of the older ScreenSaver have entries in the System.ini which XP does not have.

This type thing along with several other older programs is why took a long shot and installed XP Pro over top of 98SE. It saved all of them and they run just find.

A lot of screensavers need to be installed. They will not just copy and work. Just copying them Does not get them Registered in the Registry properly.

Also they may not install into the same folder as they would in SE.
