Did you do anything in your registry that could've caused this? I deleted the EXE reference in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command which is responsible for making EXEs open when you 2click them. When I did this I couldn't run any EXEs by 2clicking them, only through the Run line could I get them to work. Check your regstry for this by typing REGEDIT at the Run command in your start menu and go to that key. If it's gone, you need to make it and then put "%1 "%" as the value.

Alternatively it could be a virus, in which case since you said you can still use your Web browser go to Housecall and let it do a free virus scan on your machine.

    'Program not Found exe file'

    Hi Shadowhawk,
I downloaded EXEfix08 to my desktop. i need to associate a file with it but I don't know how to do that. I wanted you to know that none of the programs work. You might have to talk me through it all..........not very good when it comes to this.
    Thanks

You've been infected by the Swen virus. Your AV detected and removed/quarantined it, but didn't fix the registry.

Download EXEFIX08.INF from the same site above. To run it, select the file, right mouse, install. (this will correct the EXE problem)

Then, download and run the SWEN Removal tool. It will fix the other registry entries that were modified.

You should still do another full virus scan with updated definitions to check.

Also, go into the options of your antivirus and change any that say Automatic, to say Ask Me. (or the equivalent).

You always want the AV to tell you what it found (the virus name) and ask you what to do. You can then tell it to attempt to quarantine the virus.

Now, you will always know if you get infected, and also the virus name.
