    Hi everyone,

I am experiencing problems in Windows Explorer/My Computer with my optical drives where they will not 'refresh' when discs are exchanged/removed.

For example, if I watch a DVD then eject the disc, the DVD title still appears next to the drive icon. Then, if I insert a data cd for example, clicking the icon will try to fire up Power DVD again! (I know for a fact it's NOT a Power DVD issue as it happens with any optical drive!)

The same happens if I initially use a data CD. Ejecting the disc and inserting another data disc acts the same way! Explorer just sees the previous disc! If I 'right click' the drive and choose 'explore', I can access the new disc without a problem, but as soon as I go back to My Computer/Explorer the initial CDROM name is next to the icon again!!

This happens on all 3 optical drives; CD-RW, DVDROM, and removable USB CR-RW. I have also experienced this problem in XP Home but never with Win2K Pro.

I've just changed MB (no difference).

    MB: Asus P4XP-X
    CPU: Pentium 4 1500Mhz (@1823Mhz)

    HD: Western Digital WD400 40Gb IDE0 Master
    CD-RW: Richoh MP7120A IDE0 slave
    DVD: LG DRD8120B IDE1 master
    All on 80 pin cables

    512Mb PC133

Please help as this is getting annoying! I can live with it, but would rather not have to!

    Cheers,

    Andy.

PS. Sorry for the long post!

    Welcome to the Board! :)

Try a Right mouse click on one of your optical devices, select Properties then the AutoPlay tab. Now select an action to take, click on Apply and OK. HTH. ;)

Thank you, I will try that.

I currently have Auto Play disabled through Customizer XP.

Shouldn't XP simply show the empty/default icon once a disc is removed though? I never experienced this problem with other versions.

    Andy.

No... as I thought, didn't solve the problem! Thanks for the suggestion anyway!

    Any more ideas warmly welcomed!

Thanks PeteC, I was all hopeful for a moment there, but still no luck!

I even tried MS's technical approach of not using "Folder View" in Windows Explorer, but with no luck.

    I will continue my quest!

    OK, for anyone interested...

I restarted "autoplay" which I had disabled through Cutomizer XP, and now the optical drives refresh as they should.

Only problem now is that bloody "autoplay" every time I insert a disk! :)

    Thanks for the suggestions.

    Andy.

In theory, if you go to My Computer, right click on CD drive > Properties > autoplay you can set up your autoplay settings depending on drive content.

Theory does not always equal practice :D

Thanks for posting back with your solution.

Holding the "SHIFT" button down when the CD is inserted will prevent it from "Auto Play ".
