    Hi,

I'm not much of a Windows user, so bear with me. I tend to play with other opertaing systems most of the time...

On my wife's Win98SE system, the context menu which appears when right-clicking on a file in the Windows Explorer is painfully slow to appear, sometimes taking 30-60 seconds. While the explorer is going through this apparently gargantuan effort, no other explorer-based tasks are possible.

Any suggestions as to where I should start looking?

    TIA!

    Copied and pasted from EasyDesk:

If your context menu (the menu appearing when you right click) is slow to appear (open) then you need to change the MenuShowDelay setting. In RegEdit go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop and fine the MenuShowDelay value. If it does not exist create a new string value and name it MenuShowDelay. The default setting is "400" lower it, or try setting it to "200 "

Which AV program are you using? When you right click on a file, it is scanned. If you have Norton or AVG, this is probably not it. But if you have MacAffee???
What do you have running at startup?

    Thanks Miz, that did it!

Interesting to note was that the MenuShowDelay value was present under the HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop key, but not in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop. Replacing the entry under the HKEY_CURRENT_USER branch restored the RMB behavior.
