The PC was working fine, until someone decided to let a "technician" from the local ISP try to set up an internet dial-up connection. Now the machine boots to the Windows 2000 setup (not the blue-screen portion, but the GUI portion). I figured if it wants to re-install, why not? Unfortunately, after going through the configuration, etc. and entering the CD-Key, the machine hangs while "Configuring COM+ ". I have tried resetting the serial port in BIOS to automatic settings, with the same problme, as well as disabling it. I am going nuts trying first of all to figure out what the idiot did (all ISP user-support techs in this country are idiots by definition) and secondly, how to get past the hang in setup.

    All Advice/suggestions welcome and appreciated

    Logik007,
Unfortunately, I do not have a backup I can restore. I have tried recovery from the manufacturere's CD, but it hangs in the same place. I will look at the other solutions in your link, and advise of their success.

    Thanx

    Success!

I booted to safe mode, which still entered the setup process, but after entering the CD-Key, right at the beginning of the last portion of setup, it reported an error in svchost.exe, and when it got to the point where it normally hangs, it said it was stopping the svchost.exe service, and then completed the installation. It then booted normally, with a basic VGA driver, but it then found and installed the correct driver. I then rebooted the machine, and everything seems to work fine. Word/Excel/etc. operate normally, and the modem works as well. I have updated the anti-virus, and installed the anti-blaster patch for Win2k. I am currently running a virus scan, but all looks well.

    Logik007,
Your link was indirectly helpful, as it reminded me about the F8 feature of Windows. I think about it all the time when working with Win98, but even tho W2K actually says "Press F8 for trouble shhoting options ", actually using them never occured to me until reading through the articles.

    Thanx for the help!
