I have purchased an older computer that has Windows XP Home on it and this has left no space to work with as the program is too big.
Does anyone know (in plain english) how to reformat it with Windows 98???

If you have a 98 Boot floppy with fdisk and format on it,
    - boot from the floppy
    - run fdisk and delete all partitions you find. If XP was set to use NTFS there will be some mention of a foreign partition since 98 doesn't understand NTFS - but fdisk will remove it.
    - create a partition
    - run fdisk /mbr to make sure the master boot record is one 98 will like
    - after you finish the fdisk and the required reboots and still from the floppy, format the partition you created earlier

Now you can put in the CD and if the floppy had CD support, begin your 98 install. Otherwise you'll need to make sure your BIOS is set to boot from a CD (if it will) and do that.

Just in case you don't have a bootable floppy around, search on here for boot floppy and you'll find several threads that offer links to places you can download all the files needed to make a good 98 boot disk.
