Hi Folks, About 3 weeks ago I purchased a new Packardbell 6080 computer running WindowsXP , home edition. The machine appeared to operate as it should.
About a week later when I connected to the internet using NTLWORLD internet provider it showed up a problem.
When switched on the computer will make 2-3 attempts before it boots up. A sereen message is displayed. It reads, "The system has recovered from a serious error ". Please send this report to Microsoft. Details of the report to be sent list the following files:(a) C:\windows\minidump\mini 100703.dmp (b) C:\docume~\william\locals~1\temp\wer5.tmp.dir00\sysdata.xml

Microsoft reported back to say that a probable cause was "Virtual CD (vcdmpdrv.sys" Contact www.virtualcdonline.com for possible solution. I did so and was more confused.

There are two relative files on the computer: (1) Virtual CD V4SDK (2) Virtual machineerror.class Java/lang

The home pages of some sites downloaded only display text for three quarters of the screen width while I know it is full screen when I use the same connection on another computer.

I would be obliged if anyone could offer me any help.
    Many thanks, William.

    Hello William,

Are you running an app that you had running on 9X? Older programs make use of virtual device drivers which XP cannot run.

One possibilty is to run that particular app in compatibility mode.

The other more likely possibility is that the drivers used in the connecting software are not compatible and need to be updated.

    Regards - Charles

Hello Charles, Thank you for your reply. My internet connection is the only thing in common to both my computers. The connection is via Terayon Terajet Docsis external modem, model ECM210 (Broadband 600). It was connected to a USB port. It works perfectly well with Windows98SE.

While discussing this problem wirh NTL Help last Sunday it was decided that it would be better to connect via REALTEK RTL8139/810xFamily Ethernet NIC which was installed on the new computer. It appeared to work for a couple of hours and then the problem returned. How would I check for compatability? This WindowsXP is very strange to me. Once again many thanks. Cheers, William.

    Yep!

Looks like you need updated version 5 or some of the hotfix patches offered by support site.

    Click on knowledge base:

    http://www.virtualcd-online.com/vcd/apps/support/knowledgebase.cfm?CaseGroupID=44&lg=0

From drop down choose option version 4 fixed
check out the errors fixed with patches

You may also wish to check out some of the other categories or just surf through some of general problems, to get an idea of what you may expect or should watch out for.

Best to have the latest version if able. Looks like version 4 can be updated to 4.51. Don't know about 5.

Hi. Goddez, Thank you. you would appear to have hit the nail on the head. Item no.1018 in the knowledge base would appear to describe my problem. It talks about a licence to download. That could be another problem as I do not use credit cards. Cheers, William.

Strange.......I had no problem downloading either of these.

    http://downloadix.hh-zfrk.com:8080/download/VCD4Up.exe
    This is the hotfix for:
Stop Error 0x1000007e through vcdmpdrv.sys with Virtual CD as of v4
With the windows start you get the following fatal error:
"A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer...
    Technical information:
    *** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xc0000005, 0x8057f2f9, 0xf896dc14, 0xf896d914)"
This is caused by a timing problem that can occur under all NT-based systems. The problem has been reproduced on a computer in which autologin was activated. The error occurs sporadically (about every tenth time). The crash happens the moment that the Virtual CD Player (vcdplay.exe) is started, normally during login.

The problem for Virtual CD v4 has been solved with a Hotfix . The hotfix requires either the installation of version 4.5.1 or the Virtual CD SDK (e.g. in HeinzeBauOffice, Packard Bell extra software package)

For Virtual CD v5 it is fixed with the version 5.0.2.

I assume this is the update to make version 4 a 4.51. The message is a little unclear to me. Dunno if they mean the fix is to update. Why would they say you need 4.51? Hmmmm, It's your call, choice is yours. Odds are if it can't be installed, it'll tell ya'.

    ===========SECOND CHOICE=======
Download the latest v4 version of Virtual CD (v 4.51)here.
    http://www.hh-zfrk.de/download/VCDv451.exe
Any purchased registration key of a previous v4-Version can be used on the demo version as well.

    ==============================
Noticed one of the qualifications was a PackardBell extra software package. Is it possible this was an added value of your OEM Packard? Have you checked your support site [PackardBell] for any patches or updates, or workarounds for known problems for this product?

Hi.Goddez, I downloaded the hotfix you suggested. I have got proper bootups since this morning. No sign of the error message.

I still have downloaded pages with text covering only threequarters of the screen width. That is probably another thing altogether. Many thanks for you help. Cheers, William.

Your most welcome williamdp. I'm so glad this worked out for you, so far. Time will tell. Noted the error faq stated this is sporadic and may happen every 9 or 10 bootups. I still think you need to check out PackardBell support, either knowledgebase or any public forum bbs, just to see if this software and error is a Packard Problem.

As for the Browser window problem that needs to be addressed in the proper forum [room]. Open a new post in the ?your? browser forum [room] and someone will come to the rescue.

Sounds like the often_seen IE "Window Size" or "open window maximized " nusiance. A search in the archives , on that topic, may save you a post. I don't have a real clear picture based on your description. Probably just me. Maybe I'm having one of them "Blond days ". :D

Thanks for the update on the final [fingers crossed] outcome.
