I recently used liveupdate in NIS. There was an update available called "Common Client" After installing, it promped for a restart which I did. Ever since my PC is starting up extremely slowly and takes a long time to load the icons in the task bar. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem I have sent Norton an email regarding this issue and letting them know in no uncertain terms I am not happy since this is not the first time this sort of problem has happened with their updates. Just wondering if anyone else has received this update and if they have experienced any problems.

    Hi

This happened to me a few months back - Symantec would not admit to anything but a little later a page appeared in the Knowledge base to say that there was a conflict with a Windows update. They then fixed it with another update. This may have just happened again. I have just 'un-installed' NIS 2003 as I have become very discontent with the whole set up plus the lack of support. I am almost sure it was a common client update when it happened to me.
Strangley my PC was slower than normal to load this week and I noticed Norton's icons where the last to appear. I have installed AVG Pro & Sygate Pro and notice a big difference already in the speed of my PC. Looks like I wasn't imaging yet more problems this time  I had made my mind up to remove him completely now I am glad I went ahead.

Hi miniB, if I remember correctly, you and I both had that problem at the same time back then. Well now it looks like it has happened again. Of course I still have not received a reply from their so-called support people.

Hi canuk - 'yes' you're right we did have the whole thing about installing on a clean boot of windows etc Looks like we have gone in a full circle and met yet again with an Norton issue!

The support they offer now is nothing like the support when I first used the software. My subscription had still a few months to go but I had taken enough of the problems plus various reports I read about Symantec. It did take me a while to finally make my mind up to remove it but have made to big step now.
Let me know if you ever think of completely un-installing as I managed to do mine with less pain by a few easy & logical steps before you run the un-install program ;)

The bad thing is, I just renewed last week. Also the popups are and ads are not being stopped by NIS now either. This morning when I started up my PC it took 3 tries to even get Windows to load. Needless to say I am totally PO'd.

I will keep you posted if I get the usual denial from their support.

Take care and thanks for responding.

    Hi Guys,

I just reinstalled XP for someone. They have NAV2003. My question is what is the Common Client component? Needs to access the Internet.

    I use NAV2002 - not there.

You also make me happy that I didn't update to 2003 :)

    Regards - Charles

I had the same problem when I reinstalled after formatting the HD. I tried all of the suggested solutions, uninstalling and reinstalling Norton about 5 times. After a lot of time and trouble I did one more uninstall/reinstall then I did a liveupdate, choosing one item at a time until I was able to isolate the one(s) that were causing the problem. I discovered that one Norton AV update {not virus defs} would stop it from loading at startup and so would the "clients" update. It didn't matter if I installed one or both of them as soon as I installed and rebooted, Norton stopped loading. I contacted Norton help and was told to disable everything in startup except the Norton items and then enable them one at a time to see what was "conflicting" with it. I opted to not install those updates instead since Norton works fine without them and I figure they have people that are paid to troubleshoot their programs so why should I do their work for them! The "offending" updates are...Sysmantec Common Client {248.2 KB} and Norton AV 2003 Program Update {English} {20.8 KB}. When you do liveupdate expand the Norton AV list and uncheck the above mentioned update, then expand the Common Client update and uncheck the one listed as being 248.2 KB. Everything works just fine if neither/both of those are not installed.
