    I'm trying to install a PCMCIA Card 56k Modem.
    When I go to add new modem and select PCMCIA modem and insert card when asked this is the message I get:

    "Windows is not able to identify or use the installed PC Card device because there is no memory area available to communicate with the device. You must make a memory area available before using this device.
    Check CONFIG.SYS file for memory manager that is excluding upper memory regions between A000 and FFFF"

    What does this mean and how can I fix it ?
    Am I installing this device the right way ?

    Any help would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks

    It means to open C:\Config.Sys with Notepad and look at the Emm386.Exe command line and see if has excluded any of the Upper Memory Blocks or EMS page. Real simple to see, it would have X=A000-FFFF there. It might be better to edit the Config.Sys file to as follows. The Device lines must be in that order and at the beginning of the file.
    Device=C:\Windows\Himem.Sys
    Device=C:\Windows\Emm386.Exe Ram
    Dos=High,Umb
