    Microsoft .NET framework was recently installed on my pc apparently either when I was installing a graphics program or an update to DirectX. Since then, even though I don’t use a password, I get a XP logon page when I boot up that I didn’t have before. I find this a waste of time. How can I get rid of it? What is NET framework and what will happen if I remove it from Add/Remove programs?

    No, I don't have and don't want either Instant Messenger or Windows Messenger.

    Don't want maybe but are you positive about the "don't have" part?

    Open sysoc.inf in notepad. Then change the following line by removing the word hide but leaving the comma's before and after it so that
    msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
    reads
    msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,,7

    Then go to add/remove and you should see Windows Messenger and (usually) should be able to remove it.

    Did that, no Messenger or Instant Messenger. I'm not going to pursue it any longer.
