I am helping a friend of a friend try to get her cable internet service working. She had it installed a couple weeks ago, the technician that set it up hooked up the cable modem ( Motorola Sound Board SB5100)and attached it to the PC via a USB connection since she did not have a NIC. He could not get the PC to connect to the internet and told her to call support and tell them she was having DNS problems. She worked with support for over an hour and was unable to get the connection to work. They told her it was her PC and not the cable service, hence the call to me.

I spent the better part of the day this past Sunday working with the cable support people trying to get the service working to no avail. I installed a NIC and changed the modem connection to it thinking it may have to do with the USB interface, I removed and reinstalled TCP/IP a couple times, updated the OS from Win98FE to Win98SE, but nothing worked. Cable support says the problem is with the PC, which I tend to agree with but I don’t know what else to check. I found some MS knowledge base articles dealing with winsock files possibly being corrupt which I’ll check out, but I was wondering if someone here with more experience in this area could provide some clue as to what might be going on.

The information displayed by the winipcfg command indicates that the signal is getting through the modem to the PC from the provider, but trying to PING or otherwise communicate out from the PC fails. IE says that the "˜page cannot be displayed’ when attempting to access any web site. No other error messages appear.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

had problems with my cable modem last year.

what fixed it was the following:

tools > internet options > connections > LAN settings

i had one of the LAN settings ingaged. should have no options selected as standard.

    Richy,

I checked there yesterday, there was nothing checked under LAN settings, but good idea though.

    trying again

I am going back this Saturday to take another whack at this PC, armed with the knowledge base articles I found on winsock. Does anyone have any suggestions before I tackle this again?
