    Removing ad frim desktop

    I accidentally clicked on an ad on a web site (I was trying to put the website on my desktop) and now I don`t know how to remove it. Can someone help me here?

    Did you make it your home page? Or is it a recurring pop-up? I am not sure what you mean by "trying to put it on your desktop ".

    Sorry about the typo ..
    What happened was I was trying to create a shortcut icon of a website for my desktop and accidentally clicked on an ad. The ad appeared, in full, not as an icon and now I can`t seem to get rid of it. Right clicking doesn`t bring up delete.
    I think it has something to do with the Active Desktop feature.

    Not familiar with Active Desktops - thought they disappeared long ago and seemingly not in XP (use Classic view) - have you tried dragging it to the recycle bin?

    Thanks for the suggestion, but it doesn`t work :(

    I thought Active Desktop was a part of the XP OS.

    Aparently it is as easy as right click delete but has to accessed from:

    *A right click on blank area of desktop

    *Select properties

    *select desktop tab

    *hit the Customize button

    *select web tab

    *highlight the url being used

    *And delete [In my case I had checkbox and I unchecked the box, click apply, then okay and poof desktop webpage was gone.]

    Hello Anne. Thanks for the suggestion but I`m afraid it doesn`t work in this case. This is not an icon/shortcut but an actual advertisement that I accidentally right clicked on rather than the URL itself. It was an ad appearing on the web page. Now the ad, in full, seems wedged on my desktop and I don`t know how to clear it off ...:confused:

    Download Startup Control Panel and see if it is listed in the startup lists - delete it from there if found.

    Hello:
    Try start, run, in the box type msconfig, click Ok. When the system config. utility opens, click the start up tab. Look for something in startup that refers to this ad. If so, un-check it and reboot. This is possibly something that is loading during your boot up. Its worth a try.

    What's the add? Dah! Never mind I see it is for "Weight Watchers ". Any idea what site you were on when this bugger hitched a ride?

    Have you looked in your control panel_ "Add/remove software" list?

    Sometimes these guys are polite enough to leave you an option of an unistall.

    Are you sure it isn't a Toolbar that came complete with an "add banner ". Does it have any option settings or help info to identify exactly what it is?

    If you just set the picture as background wallpaper, de-select it on the Desktop tab in Display properties.

    Ouweeee,

    Good catch Angel71. It didn't even occur to me that this may be as simple as setting an ad pic as desktop wallpaper.

    I tried your link, Pete, and got the following message "Source file could not be read. Try again later" Hmm.

    Also, when trawling through Windows Explorer I came across the following: C:/windows/offlinewebpages/http://view.atdmt.com/avenue/view/msnnkwwa01800015ave/diect/01

    Could it be significant? I was on MSN at the time and I notice that `ww`is in the URL. I`m loath to delete anything until I know what it is!

    Any suggestions?

    I tried the Save Scheme option (using Weight Watchers as the title) but it doesn`t seem to be appearing on my Desktop in Display. This is like having a wisdom tooth removed! :eek:

    PS: All you guys are so helpful. Thanks.

    Ann! That`s exactly what it looks like! So I should just delete the entry I posted from Windows Explorer?

    To remove a site that you have set for offline viewing in the favorites list:

    While in IE:

    Click on the Favorites folder and see if you have or can find the url:
    http://view.atdmt.com/avenue/view/msnnkwwa01800015ave/diect/01

    *If found right click on it and select properties

    *On the tab "Web Document ", Uncheck the box that says "make this page available offline "

    * click apply...Okay and close.

    *delete the url

    =======
    Now right click on blank area of desktop and select Properties

    click on the Desktop Tab

    and select any of the other wallpapers in the list, other than what you have now, as a desktop wall paper. Click Apply and then Okay.
    ==================

    I hope it's as simple as this! Fingers crossed for ya'.

    =====================
    The above directions was for this one particular site. You could also do the Full monty by Tools/internet options/On the General Tab in the category "temporary Internet Files" Dlete files button/i nclude offline pages.

    This will delete all IE Temp plus all offline sites you may have set, but if you still have them in Favorites and are allowing the "auto syncronize option" they will just wind up back in there [I think].

    This morning, as I was lying in bed, the room was filled with light, there was a drum roll and a voice in my head said "Try System Restore, dummy!" So I did. And guess what? Nice clean desktop, that`s what!

    Thanks for all your suggestions, they were not wasted and helped me better to understand XP to which I am a relative newcomer.

    I`ll be ba-ack!
