i'm using windows 98 and have the following programs in the task manager:

    Explorer
    Ccapp
    Stimon
    Point32
    Systray
    Ptsnoop
    Nprotect
    Imgicon
    Rnaapp

what happens is when i boot up my computer, the dial-up connection screen pops up and tries to connect to the internet. this has only recently started to happen. any ideas?

p.s Ptsnoop is the result of my modem type and not a trogan!

Have you installed any new software recently? Could be a program trying to phone home looking for updates.

In Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Connections check 'Always dial my default connection' or temporarily to check on boot ' Never dial.....'

A strong possibility is that you have a virus or spyware aboard - trust your virus definitions are up todate - like as of today. Run a full virus scan, then look for spyware.

Download and immediately update their referemce files Spybot and AdAware

    Run Spybot first then Adaware.

If you don't have a firewall you would be well advised to get one fast - try Kerio which is freeware and highly recommended on this Board or ZoneAlarm also freeware.

richy_kiss_kiss--Rnaapp is the "Dial-Up Networking Application ". Is it in your StartUp list in MSCONFIG? (Start|Run|type msconfig|click OK.) If, yes, uncheck the box to the left of the line. Is Rnapp (or Dialup Networking) in the Start|Programs|Startup folder? If yes, delete.
On the other hand is your dialup connection trying to access any site other than your usual home page? If yes, then you might have spyware or a hijacker.

Good news - thanks for posting back.

Run Spybot regularly - and check each time for a reference file update.
