I picked up an old maching - AMD K6-2 @ 400 mHz. Fixing for my grandkids. The sound was on the m/b but not enabled. When I enable it, the WIN 98SE found the CMI8330/C3D hardware. Downloaded drivers and installed. Now I get Windows sound but can't play a CD. I tried using Windows CD Player and no sound. I downloaded RealOne and tried it. The sound came fine for their advertisement, but no sound from playing the CD. The CD light flickers like it should but no sound. Any suggestions what might be wrong?

Just a question first...what kind of CD? Is it a music CD you bought or a CD-R or CD-RW you burned?

Knowing the above info may speed up an answer but just in case...if it's a CD-RW you burned it may not be readable by the older CD-ROM most of the time they aren't.

Check to make sure there is a CD Audio Cable that runs from the motherboard to the CD-ROM.

The CD I'm trying to play is a purchased music CD.. I don't have any extra cable on the CD, just the power and EIDE Cable.

I think that is what your problem is then. Being that you have on-board sound the board should have a fitting to plug-in the CD audio cable. The cable should run from the board to the CD-ROM. If the CD-ROM has a jack for headphones see if you can hear the music through your headphones.
