When trying to power up the PC, a dos message appears stating Windows file or file application missing and points to a virus protection program file on a serparate hard drive. Windows starts to desktop but we cannot open any applications. The error message that appears is:

    "Program not found
    Windows cannot find file stpiqmtf.exe
This program is needed for opening files of type 'Application'"

It then prompts for the location of the file.

Have inserted Windows 98 disk but with no luck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as we have a teenage son who keeps messing around the PC and creating problems!!!

    Thanks.

That is not a Windows file. You should probably run a check for spyware using Ad-aware, SpyBot, or both. You could also check msconfig for odd or unrecognized startup items. Sounds like somebody installed something and perhaps didn't correctly uninstall it.

Download and run the "FixExe" file from the following site:

    http://www.geocities.com/plansdowne_ca

Unzip it a floppy on another computer and then simply double click on the registry file to import it.

Once complete, run a full virus scan.

Your antivirus has detected and quarantined the virus.

The FIXEXE this will correct the EXE problem, but if the virus was SWEN, other extensions are still wrong, such as PIF, COM, etc.

Download and run the SWEN Removal tool. It will fix the other registry entries that were modified.

    http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_remtext.php?id=swen

And, as suggested, still do a full virus scan with updated definitions to check.

Also, go into the options of your antivirus and change any that say Automatic, to say Ask Me. (or the equivalent).

You always want the AV to tell you what it found (the virus name) and ask you what to do. You can then tell it to attempt to quarantine the virus.

But at least now, you will know that you were infected, and with which virus.

    tried fixexe but no luck

Thanks to those that supplied answers but I have had no luck on all fronts.

I downloaded fixexe to a floppy on a different computer and then tried to import by double clicking but it would not import. I get the same error message as before, that the stpiqmtf.exe file is missing.

I cannot access msconfig.exe or run any of the spyware, etc as I cannot run anything other than internet explorer.

I also downloaded the SWEN removal tool but again cannot run it.

I can download from the internet alright but cannot run anything at all.

Hope any of you can advice as to something I am doing wrong or give some more tips.

    Thanks heaps.

Try this: Copy and Paste the following in bold into Notepad, with Word Wrap turned off. Please note the lines with the [ ] must be on one line. When you save it, Save As "c:\fixit.reg" with the quotes. This is so it does not end up named as C:\Fixit.Reg.Txt.

    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\comfile\shell\open\command]
    @= "\ "%1\" %* "

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\piffile\shell\open\command]
    @= "\ "%1\" %* "

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\exefile\shell\open\command]
    @= "\ "%1\" %* "

    Now Restart in Dos Mode; and type in the following command;
    regedit c:\fixit.reg <press enter>

Thanks to all for your help

Thank you to everyone who posted a reply to my problem. I got my PC going again and got rid of the SWEN virus errors. I am so happy that I was able to do this myself and learn more about my PC in doing so.

I really appreciate all your help as it was extremely useful.
