Have reloaded Win 98 SE to computer. When I double click the IE icon, I am taken to the "Welcome to MSN Internet Access" screen. It wants me to set up a modem. I connect via broad band. If I right click on the IE icon, open explore, it takes me to my default home page via the broadband just fine. If I cllick on a link in this page, I am returned to to the "Welcome to MSN Internet Access" screen. How to I tell it that I am connecting via a LAN and not a modem?

    Thanks

    Mike

Open Internet Explorer, Click on Tools and select Internet Options, Click on the Connections tab. Adjust your settings there, make sure you select Never Dial A Connection.

I have tried the LAN settings from the connection tab--the only option is to auto detect settings--have tried it both ways and no change--all dial options are greyed on on connection tab.???

I do not believe your are connecting via a LAN ( Local Area Network )

You want to set up an INTERNET connection. Not a LAN.

You need to work through Right Clicking on Internet Explorer Icon ( the one on the Desktop ), select Properties and then the connections tab.

Was this a clean install or a reload overtop of existing. ?

Is the NIC installed/working correctly ?

Did you re-install drivers for it ?

    It was a reload
NIC and drivers are fine--if I go to explore with the IE application, I can get to the default hoame page, but if I click a link on that page, I go back o the MSn setuo wizard. Seems there used to be a screen whre it would ask if you connect to the net via a lan, but I can't get to it--very strange.

In IE go to tools, Internet Options, Connections tab, there is a Setup button at the top, click on that and it goes thru the setup for what you want.

If that doesn't work try the repair function (Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > IE > Repair) and if that doesn't work reinstall or upgrade IE.
