I just Formatted my HD then installed My Windows Xp home. Next my Mobo drivers then My antivirus (PC-Cillin) then my Modem drivers. Connected, went online and downloaded the latest Virus pattern files. Next I went to the windows update and low and behold up pops a box telling me I will be shut down in 60 sec (blaster virus) my Pc-Cillin also jumped in telling me that it was this. I restarted my Pc and deleted said file from quarantine and then went to microsoft update again only to be told because of my ActiveX security setting the page would not load. I put these to low then tried again. Success the page loaded but then I got a pop up asking me for my e mail address as Microsoft wanted it and were doing a survey. I obviously did not put it in and closed the pop-up. I decided to do a scan of my sytem and was amazed to find 4 Viruses. MS.BLAST, JS.NOCLOSE.E, BKDR_SDBOT.A, WORM_NACHI.A. I deleted these then went back to the update page. Guess what I got a box that was not signed and had a security warning asking me if I want to install and run the windows update cab. Also the publisher could not be found due to Authenticode signature not found. I get this everytime I go to windows update now. After running out of patience I decided to click on it and see what happens, nothing it dissapears as if the update software is being installed then nothing. If I press update software on the page it appears again. I have even run Trends Sysclean with the latest pattern file from safe mode and I do not have any viruses according to it. I have also run virus scans from Symantec and it comes up ok. What I would like to know is where did I get the original Viruses from as I did a format. (twice and still they appeared back) And have even tried downloading the manaul windows update file but when I go to unzip it it fails also saying # error 25139 and error corrupt input. All I want to do is install all the critical updates but it seems something is stopping me, please can someone help as I am pulling my hair out now!

    Hello Charley,

Help with the MS update, read this article: http://www.windows-help.net/WindowsXP/troub-08.html

The virus's, go here and do some 3rd party checking to be sure you are free of infections http://www.wilders.org/free_services.htm

Never set activeX controls to low. MS does reguire them to be enabled, I prompt for them. Read this article on Browser security settings http://www.windows-help.net/features/surf-safe.html

This on general security settings and practices http://www.cert.org/homeusers/HomeComputerSecurity

    Regards - Charles

Thanks for the reply and the links, just tested for Viruses and all seems fine, still to look at the other sites you posted. Is it possible for Viruses to still be there even after a format? Still to have a go at windows update, will try tomorrow as it is time for bed.

    Hello charlysays,

"Is it possible for Viruses to still be there even after a format? "

Its possible to have a BIOS virus, but that's rare.

Thanks for all your help I have now managed to install all my critical updates. I have not got a clue what happened though. My girlfriend called me last night as she was working on the Pc and told me something was flashing up on screen, thinking the worst I had a look. It was the windows Automatic updater box flashing saying updates were ready to download. Strange I thought so I went ahead, it downloaded all the critical updates and I installed them. I then tried going to the Windows update site that I had so many problems with and it worked fine. Have not got a clue why it suddenly started working but it saved me re-formatting and re-installing everything. Once again thanks for all your help and fingers crossed, no more Viruses etc.
