I have been having this problem for a while and unfortunately do not remember how long its been and whether or not it has been since I installed XPpro on top of Win 98 but anyway here is the dilema?>
I used to be able to just put a CD in drive and computer would see it and start to load it up, now if I put one in I hear it make some noise and thats it. The only way I can get it to read a CD is to leave the CD in and shut down PC and once it boots back up it reads the CD ok.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Mike

    Hello Mike,

    The auto-play feature isn't on.

My Computer > right click on the drive > properties > click Autopaly tab > select disk type > in the actions section select the option of what to do.

However, quite aside the autoplay, what happens if you double click on the drive with the cd in it? It should open.

    Regards - Charles

    Hello Mike,

    Its fine.

Choose an action - either open files/folders with Windows explorer if a data cd, or if a music cd, play.

You should be presented with this choice every time you insert a disc into the drive.

    Regards - Charles

OK here is what is going on???

    I insert disk.
I hear it start to spin up.
A little CD disc shows up and flashes beside my mouse arrow.
I go to CD icon on my computer and double click and it says to insert a disc which is already in.
    MMM..crazy one.

    Any ideas?

Sorry to be a pain....its the only trouble I'm having with it.

I have come across this on my m/c - never found out exactly what the cause was, but I cured the problem by one or both of the following - don't remember which.

    Either :

    1. Remove CD drive in device manager and reboot and let Win find it again

    2. Unplugged ribbon cable from drive - reboot - shut down - re-connect ribbon cable - reboot

    Give it a try.

I guess you have the same problem if you try to read the CD drive in Windows Explorer?

    Hi,
Well, I tried both ideas and still the same..bummer.. I was just reading thread above from ODlink...he or she appears to have the exact same trouble as me but I do not get any error messages at all. I'm wondering if my CD-Rom is bad? Anyway its not a huge problem....more inconvenient. Just shut the damm thing down with CD in drive and away we go.
If you have any more ideas please feel free to send them....I will try all!!

Me too, I'm thinking a Windows update might be the problem? Any ideas which one?

    :D Solved it!

I'd recently updated Nero to v6 and decided to try Nero Backup by creating a scheduled Nero Backup job. That appears to be what caused the problem. After deleting the backup job from the scedule and rebooting, I was able to read my CD's again.

Just for good measure I disabled NJB.exe in HKCU/Run with StartupCPL.

Hope this helps the rest of you.
