I'm stumped trying to configure my ThinkPad (running XP Pro) to access the internet via my new cell phone (Nokia 5100).

I have no problem getting the laptop to recognise the active IRDA link with the phone. However the phone software expects the laptop to have a device called "Standard Model over IR link." My Add Hardware Wizard confirms that I have such a device installed and that it is functioning normally. However, it does not appear on my list of Modems under "Phone and Modems" or Device Manager in the Control Panel.

Any idea how to remedy this?

Have you installed the Modem Driver for the 5100 from Nokia's website?

downloaded nokia_2000_7201IrDa.inf , but not sure what to do with it (no instructions on the Nokia site.)
Also tried to install their connectivity suite -- without success as it could not find the IR modem. Note that the guide for the installation of the connectivity suite says that under XP it should detect the IR modem without user intervention.

    :(

Right click on inf file and select 'install' - should be more than just an inf file I would think.

Did as you suggested. No visible change.
Tried rebooting, uninstalling their connectivity suite, rebooting, reinstalling it, rebooting. No visible change.

"Standard modem over IR link" still looks fine to the Hardware Wizard, but can't be found by Device Manager nor anything else.

Herein may lay the problem - Add Hardware Wizard shows a list of what can be installed, not what is installed. Device Manager shows what is installed and it seems that "Standard modem over IR link" is not.

Have you asked Add Hardware Wizard to install this - probably need to do it with the manual option.

    Good point. Let me clarify.

When the IR link is active (and only then!), the Add Hardware Wizard does its search thing and eventually displays the Standard Modem over IR link in a list of "The following hardware is already installed on your computer." Selecting the modem at that point and choosing "Next" causes the Wizard to report that the device is working normally.

This is the only place in which I have been able to get the system to acknowledge the presence of this modem.

Understand what you are saying on this - almost seems that it is an 'install on demand' situation here.

Have you tried - with the IR link inactive - installing the ' Standard .....' manually through Add Hardware Wizard?

I have never dabbled with IR connections - don't have one on my laptop, so this is a very grey area for me.

I hope someone else with the relevant experience will chip in on this thread.

Manual installation is what I think that's what I'm doing in the step I've described (badly) above.

The Add Hardware Wizard searches for and finds no new Plug&Play hardware. It then asks whether the hardware is already connected. Thereafter it displays the list of currently installed hardware.

Did you have something different in mind?

Yes - when you get to the screen in Add New Hardware Wizard titled 'The following Hardware is already installed on your computer' scroll down to the bottom to Add a new hardware device and click on it > next . Install the hardware manually ... >next > and so on. Possible you will not find your device listed, but worth a try.

However read the KB article first.

Thanks. I read the KB article, but it doesn't sound pertinent to me. There appears to be no trouble establishing the IR link, and I'm not trying to use Microsoft ActiveSync; it doesn't appear to cover anything else.

I'll try the manual installation you suggested.

No luck with manual installation either, I'm afraid.

Trying the manual install as you suggested, the Standard Modem over IR link is not listed as one of the available modems (nor is it under IR devices.) I then went back and tried to let Windows detect the modem on its own (while IR link active); it could not find it.

Hmm... sorry, this is where I bow out and let those with more experience in this area take over.

Good luck - hope you get to the bottom of this.
