I have just recently found that I can no longer send attachments in my e-mails. I use Outlook Express. Previously I found I could not receive attachments but I have overcome that.
    Can anyone please help?

What happens when you try to send a message with an attachment? Do you get an error message?

How large was the last attachment that failed to send? Some ISPs have limits on the file size of attachments.

    can no longer email attachments

 I don't know if you every figured this out.
I can't send any emails with attachments of any kind...
    Get error 'A time-out occurred while communicating w/server;Protocol:SMTP, Port:25, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number 0x800CCC19'
My system has WinXP Home Edition Version 2002 SP1, IE 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633, OE 6.00.2800.1123. I've checked Microsoft Knowledge Base and Newsgroups. And a lot of people are having the same problem, but no solution to be found. Has anyone found a fix for this problem? Have discovered it's not just an Outlook Express problem. All mail programs are effected and file uploading, also.
    I'm not on a network and/or using a router.
I have turned off Norton Anti-Virus Scanning of incoming and outgoing emails.(although I don't like this suggestion)
I've changed the time-out server from 1 minute all the way to 5 minutes and I still get time-out error.
I unchecked the "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened" and use the Internet Zone in OE/Tools/Options/Security.
And My ISP is not having server problems. I ran a test email on my older PC and all emails with attachments ran smoothly.
This all started happening after installing Microsoft's Critical Update http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-039.asp (KB824146)
As you can guess, I've been searching for an answer ever since.(9/10/03) I'm getting so fed-up that I even tried Incredimail...and get this, It can not send emails with attachments either. So, I know it has to be something that stupid CRITICAL UPDATE changed in WinXP. Can anyone HELP??? I removed the update through Add/Remove, but still can't send attachments.

    Had Enough,
    S.Garrison

    sending attachments

Thanks for taking the trouble to reply. I have been advised to increase the server time out which I have done. I have just sent a huge attachment with photograph. Now I don't know yet if it's got there but it is in my Sent folder!!
To do this you go to Outlook Express, Tools, Accounts, properties of account, advanced, server time out. I increased it to the longest which was 5 mins. I also increased at the same time the number of kb's from 30 to 350! I think I may have cracked it!
We'll see. I'll let you know if I can. I find this website very confusing. Already lost one reply I wrote to you about this!
I seem to have the same PC as you. Windows XP Home edition, same sort of memory, Norton anti virus everything, spam killer the lot. Quick Clean and Firewall and Privacy. I've got Adaware, Spybot, PC something or other , Ramboot - all sorts!
I like using Kazaa Lite which I thought had mixed everything up as it uses a lot of memory.
This problem has been keeping me awake at night for the last three weeks. Now perhaps I can relax. Hope so!
All the best, I hope it works for you. Polly. :p :p

    Sending Attachments

    Hi,

I'm so glad you responded. I've been everywhere on the web trying to get answers. I know what you're saying about not sleeping. I'm only getting a couple hrs a night. Maybe we can fiqure this out and help all the others, I know are out there with the same problem.

I've already tried the timeout setting, but I'm not sure what you mean by changing the kb .... Where would setting that be found?

    Thanks in advance,
    S.Garrison:eek:

Under the sub heading 'sending' it says :-
A small box (which I ticked) and then 'break apart messages larger than (another box) inwhich I wrote 350 - KB
KB I assume stands for Kilobytes! Let me know how you get on. I'm going to send another e-mail with attachmet to my son - he will reply immediately to say if he got it or not. P.

I made the change of "Break apart msg larger than ??KB" to your suggestion of 350. Then I tryied to send an email w/attachment, but got same timeout error. I guess my search for a fix has not ended. I'll keep intouch if I discover a fix.

    Thanks for your help,

I've just had a message from an expert......
He's checked his settings and this is what he's told me to do:-
Go to tools, Accounts, choose your setup and Properties - Advanced and set the figures at 110 and 25.
Moving down to where it says, 'Break Up Messages' You must untick the box so it greys out. ie no break up of messages at all.
Delivery UNTICK so leaving message on server etc. is all greyed out.
He says, try it, it should work and solve all your problems.
The problem has been setting the settings that should have been left alone!. P. Good luck.

I reverted back to the settings unchecked after my test showed no improvement in sending attachments.
The problem is not just Outlook Express.
I have tried sending email attachments from Yahoo mail, and also Webmail. Neither would upload the files, and neither gave me any kind of error. So I can't look up the error number.
Any ideas. If you have an online mail client, try it and see if you can send the attachments from there. I'm interested to know if I'm the only one to discover this.

No, mine didn't work this time. It's been OK all evening till now. It's very spasmodic. I've been sending really important attachments through my Hotmail account with no problems.
I will wait to hear from you again. P:eek:

I'm discovering that I can't ftp files either. If one of these programs would just give me an error to work with. But knowing Microsoft, even the error number wouldn't have help for me. I'm going to quit for awhile. Good Luck in your search.

Here are some more things to try: (CAREFULLY)
    1. Do a full back up of all personal data ie. letters, e-mails, spreadsheets, music files, photos etc.
Do not proceed unlessyou are happy.
Uninstall the KB824146 patch. Test sending Attachments ---- if no luck proceed to step 4.
Use the winXP System Restore tool to revert to a time earlier to when you installed the patch. Test sending attachments.
Another time remember 'If it's not broken, don't fix it!'
Sometimes patches really mess up a system. Interesting to read that someone says it is intermittant - because that's what I found.

    email attachments and file uploads

I just got my system 8/12/03, so I tried the Restore windows back to its beginnings. But guess what, the restore didn't reset whatever setting that is causing the problem. I ftp, upload, and send email attachments almost daily, and I know everything was working find up till 9/10/03, when I did the KB824146 update. I've already tried removing just KB824146, but no change in behavior. I checked out the links you advised, but they only had question, not answers.

    Thanks for the ideas anyway,

    Finally a question I can answer...:) :)

    ftp is File Transfer Protocol
I use it to update webpages, but you can visit sites that are dedicated to ftp all over the web. I think its a fast way to upload and download files.

Thanks, but I don't think it's for me. I'm not that good!
By the way, my e-mail attachments seem to be going - ok.
I sent a lot of test files this am and have heard they all arrived!!
I'm busy now emptying all my folders beside OE that I keep letters and things in because I did have so much stuff I never look at that my guru last night said that could be one reason why things were going so wrong. Even though they are received, I get the same messages that there is an error!
I'm beginning to feel I should clean everything off and start again from scratch. I've just had an e-mail with W32Bugbear.b.com and had to run the anti virus. At least McAfee is earning its keep! I am virus free, spam free, Firewalled, Privacy guarded, Pop up free and God knows what! Don't you think we ought to write and complain to Microsoft about their patch? Who do you write to?
There's enough people bothered by it. I'm not going to just downlod any old recommended update in future. If things is working OK; It's best to leave well alone. I'm so sorry and share your frustration. P

That is a very good idea, but if we can't get them to help with tech support, how in the world will they every read our complaints. I've sent several emails to them and not one has been answered.
 That's why I'm here. Searching for help...

And really I don't want to complain, I just want, "The ability to send files," back....you know a quick fix...

Since I have removed McAfee 'Privacy' completely my attachments are working with no problem. I wrote to McAfee to tell them but have had no response - that was over a week ago! I think that the Privacy programme clashed with what I had downloaded from Microsoft. Now I am avoiding any downloads. I paid good money in May this year for 'Privacy' but I really don't need it. No money in bank accounts, no young children to protect from the bad websites....etc.
I do think that Microsoft should be told - yes! How to contact them AND get anyone to take any notice? Polly.

I'm using Norton's, I can't find any settings called privacy. But I did disable while trying to send an email with attachment. It didn't make a difference thou. Still got time-out error.

    Congrads on your success,

:) :)Pauline, (see those smiley faces) thanks so much for your suggestings and just making me feel someone cares. It really helped. I finally got my email attachments to send. My solution is described below.

If anyone is having problems sending email with stationery or just sending attachments, try the following.

Go to your modems support page...Download newest driver, with installation instructions...(note some drivers recommend complete uninstall, before installing new driver. Make sure, this does make a difference.) Even if you have the newest driver already. download a new copy, just in case yours has been corrupted. Then disconnect from internet. .. and install new driver as instructed from manufacture of driver.

I hope this helps others fix this problem a lot smoother than it was for me.

    S.Garrison
