My computer keeps jumping straight to the workstation instead of my desktop when I turn it on, and I have to change the settings every time to get it to show the desktop.

Also, when I turn the computer of, it almost always gives me a message that the program isn't responding to what the system is telling it to do, and gives me an option to wait, finish the task or cancel.

It's been doing this for a few weeks now, and being the technological idiot that I am, I haven't been able to fix it. So... help?

Hi Irina - welcome to the Board :)

Need a few more details and explanation here .......
Exactly what do you mean by 'workstation' ? An open program window like Windows Explorer? As I recall from my days with Win 98 - now using XP - if any programs were open when Windows was shut down then they re-opened when Windows was next started.
    Which program?

Post back with these details and we may get somewhere.

Right, I'll try explaining some more...

Well, basically the screen goes white and it says 'workstation' up in the corner...

Well, the message headline says 'WIN95 RPC Wmsg Window', but the actual message doesn't tell me anymore.

    That's the best explanations I have... I told you I'm a technological idiot :p

    Irina,

No such thing as a 'Technological Idiot' - and no need for any apologies - implied or otherwise :) We all started at square 1 remember.

Think you have 2 problems which may - or may not be related.

I have absolutely no idea as to the source/cause of the white 'workstation' screen. If my second suggestion does not cure that I suggest you start another thread titled ' Windows boots to white workstation screen - why? ' or something along those lines.

As for the error message I found this post in the Board archives -

    "Win 95 RPC Wmsg

All you need to do to correct this problem is to download DCOM98 v1.3 from the Microsoft Website. It is a small executable that will correct a few files that are causing the RPC function to hang. "

The file can be downloaded from here - ignore point 4.
    http://www.microsoft.com/com/dcom/dcom98/download.asp

Click on 'DCOM98 for Windows 98' and in the dialogue box which appears select 'Save' and in the next dialogue specify a folder on your hard drive. When the download is complete go to that folder and double click on dcom98.exe to install it.

Hopefully that will fix the Win 95 RPC Wmsg problem.

To Fix the "Workstation" probelm, do the following:

Click on the start button, and select "Run "

    type "msconfig.exe" and press enter.

Click on the tab across the top of what appears that is labelled "Startup ".

Untick everything except your antivirus (if any), firewall (ditto), system tray, scan registry, and task monitor.

Clcik on "OK ", and say that you will reboot later. Close ALL open windows and programs, then restart your PC. Report your results here.

    Cheerz!
