? in Other Device (w98se)

What does the ? next to the PCI MM Audio Device mean. This is message when trying to install sound card: Drivers not installed. (After I installed the drivers from CD)

Brand new sound sound card.
Disabled on-board audio device VIA AC97.
Any clues what the problem is?

speakers are working in WinXP machine

So it can't be the speakers in the Win98 machine.

Anybody have a clue?

I'll put a wild guess here. In Device Manager, under Sound, Video and Game Controllers, do you have a listing for Wave Device for Voice Modem? If not, that could be your Other Device.

I put the Win98 to rest.
It's been a helluva month. Mercury in retrograde.
The Olympus digi-cam went out, had to order a new media card.
The sound won't work in the Win98 -- but the machine works.
The Win2000 O/S went bust, I bought a WinXp machine because didn't want to go through the hassle of fixing it.
Then -- the print heads on the printer went bust.

This just isn't my month and it's very expensive.
