I tried to acess a chat room and keep getting the message

"Your browser is unable to support Java. Please enable Java and reload "

How do I do that in XP Home?

    Thanks

If your version of XP is fairly recent there is a strong possibility that you do not have Java installed. MS removed Java from SP1 as a result of an ongoing court case with Sun.

    First -

IE > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced - scroll down to Java and ensure that 'JIT compiler .................. ' is checked.

If there is no reference to Java you probably don't have it installed.

If this is the case download and install Sun Java from
    http://www.java.com/en/index.jsp

Pete, Thank you so much for your help again. How do you remember all this stuff? I am humbled.
Anyway now when I try to load a Yahoo chat room the little Java coffee cup displays and than shortly is replaced by this message.

"Unable to load applet. You may need to download an updated version of the Microsoft VM from WWW.Microsoft.com/java "

I did check IE options etc and after downloading the Java as you suggested Java is listed as such "Use Java 2v1.4.2_01 for <applet> [requires restart]" and is checked.

I have restarted from a cold reboot several times. Any other suggestions. I have reformatted my HD recently and downloaded all critical updates and some other non critical.

    Thanks
    Floyd

Seems like your Yahoo chat room requires MS Java - as I understand it can no longer be downloaded from MS, so go
here - I would suggest the second option.

MS VM and Sun VM will co-exist quite happily.

    Hope this solves your problem.

I think it was sneaky to uninstall M$VM with the SP, despite the legal obligations. I ran quite happily w/o the SP for a year, finally put it on because people far more experienced than me said to, and suddenly, I couldn't get into a Yahoo chat room either. It took me awhile to figure out what the problem was- I kept going in circles, but thanks to a chance reading in a tech newsletter it hit me what happened. M$VM and Sun Java do coexist nicely, I agree, and I'm back doing the things I was able to do before. Lucky for you, Floyd, Pete told you what to do- I spent hours trying to research it on my own. Hope it works out for you.

    Java Troubles

Thanks again folks, but I'm still getting the same message.

When I go to IE options - Advanced,
    Under Java (Sun) It says:

"Use Java 2v1.4.2_01 for <applet> [requires restart] ".

and under Microsoft VM it says:

    "Java console enabled [requires restart]"
    "Java logging enabled "
"JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled [requires restart]"

    All four items are checked

Do you run any ad blocking software? I use AdSubtract Pro and it blocks Java by default. Norton can also be set to block Java. Check your Internet Security and/or ad blocking software to make sure you don't have it blocked from there.

    Good idea, but no cigar.

I disabled McAfee and a web accelerator that has add blocking capabilities, as well as I exited my Goggle tool bar that can block pop ups also. I also unchecked EVERYTHING in my start up menu in msconfig.

What has me puzzled is why 3 of those items in my options, advanced, say restart required (see above), which I've done several times of course.

    Java Prob/XP

Has anyone else seen such problems as those described by Floyd? Any resolution?

I've got two customers on XP having similar issues. Despite downloading and installing both the Microsoft and Sun JVMs, whenever either machine hits a VM checking page, a message states Java is not supported.
