Arie, I have another question, if you don't mind.....
If I am running both computers thru the Linksys Router, do I really need to run the personal firewall, like Zone Alarm?

AFAIK not. For sure not for incomming traffic. If you are worried about outgoing traffic (spyware for example), then maybe..... I'm not sure, 'cos I don't have a router yet, so I can't say for sure....

ZA & MS Security Roundup 2/11

I am unable to reach the product catalogue on Windows Update web site (Cannot Display Page). Very annoying. It used to work fine.
This began after installing the 2/11 Security patch. I am not certain that is the cause (since I didn't realize the problem until a couple of weeks later). BTW I tried all MS recommandations to no avail. I uninstalled the Security patch & closed ZA (& Norton AV & anything I can think of) Still no joy.
What do you think? Is it ZA related or what?

 I am running IE5.5 sp 2 on W98SE and have had no trouble installing security updates UNTIL MS02-009 (Q318089).
It updated the Vbscript.dll but did not show up under the Help/about IE. The article says the update should have the Vbs55men.inf and I do not. There is a Vbs55men.lgc.

It said it installed and I have received no errors but curious why it doesn't show up under help. Any ideas? I disable virus and script blocking when I installed.

I lost access to the windowsupdate site on Feb 22 (using Win95B IE5.5sp2) and I didn't install the Q316059.exe patch for the 2-11-02 cumulative IE update until February 25th.
See THIS THREAD for alternate WindowsUpdate sites.

Here is a newsgroup post I found on the issue:

Not only is Windows 95 not supported anymore at the Windows Update site, but I found out that machines running Windows 98 with IE 4.01 SP2 or IE 5.0 (previously supported) are no longer supported as well.

I didn't install the Q318089 patch but I looked at MS02-009 and it says under Verifying patch installation:

"To verify the individual files, use the patch manifest provided in Knowledge Base article
Q318089 ". It didn't mention using Help About IE to verify installation.

Q318089 says that the English version of the Internet Explorer 5.5 for Windows Me, Windows 98, and Windows NT 4.0 update should have the following file attributes or later:

    06-Jun-2000 5.50.4134.600 Advpack.dll 92,432
    21-Jan-2002 ------------- Vbs55men.inf 977
    02-Jan-2002 5.5.0.7302 Vbscript.dll 458,813
    06-Jun-2000 4.71.704.0 W95inf16.dll 2,272
    06-Jun-2000 4.71.16.0 W95inf32.dll 4,608

so why you show Vbs55men.lgc and not Vbs55men.inf I don't know. I opened my pending Vbs55men.exe setup file in Winzip and it does list Vbs55men.inf Setup Information file but not Vbs55men.lgc. All I know about inf files is that they are used for installation, for example, with the W95 powertoy cabview you would right click the downloaded cabview.inf file and select install.

Thank you for alternate site BUT I am still hankering for the real thing. Sometimes I think it is just being so annoyed about not understanding why it is happening.

It could be a temporary problem at Microsoft's end but, besides disabling your antivirus and closing ZoneAlarm you could also try closing all other programs except Internet Explorer before going to WindowsUpdate, including programs you see running in the background when you do a Ctrl/Alt/Delete.

Also look at the mskb article,
WINUP-Err Msg: "Cannot Display Page" (Q243787) and try the suggestions.

Also, more information from you might help, including:
    - Your Windows version and IE version
    - How you are connecting to windowsupdate (link from start menu or IE)
    - What exactly happens when you you go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
    - What have you already tried

    You could also look through
    MrScary's WindowsUpdate Resource Page

    Getting Back to Alice

    Alice
    Thank you for your rsponse.
I am running W2K & I.E. 6 & have the same problem when trying to connect from I.E. or Statup menu.
Unfortunately I have already tried all the remedies outlined in MS Document Q243787.
I have closed all programs. Disabled anything I can think of. I even uninstalled 2/11 security patch, all to no avail.
What happens is quite simple. When I attempt to reach MS product catalogue from Windows Update web site it shows that message about MS gathering info without your sending any (what ever that means) & sometimes for a split second it shows the correct page about selecting software BUT then instead displaying whatever info it normally gives (i.e. no crucial updates at this time etc. available at this time ") it shows the Cannot Display This Page.
Let me stress until about 10 days ago it worked just fine. The last installation I did by using "product catalogue" was 2/11 security patch (which I uninstalled). The only new application was Gator which I uninstalled.
It is true that I run Norton AV BUT I always have & I also disabled every aspect of Norton to no avail. I don't have the energy to totally uninstall Norton AV & under the circumstances ( "product catalog" worked just beautifully till now) I just don't think it is worth the hassle.
Again thanks for your time & thanks for any future ideas.

I don't have any new ideas other than to check the Win2000 and windowsupdate newsgroups to see if others are complaining about this (do a groups.google.com search) or repost this here as a new "windowsUpdate" question. Since uninstalling the 2-11-02 IE patch didn't help matters you might also want to reinstall it.

Speaking of newsgroup searches, I found this post on the Q318089 vbscript update,

    for ivajig

It seems that not having a Vbs55men.inf is OK since it is only needed to install the update. The main mission of the update is to replace the vbscript.dll with an updated version and make a few registry changes.

    Back to Alice Again

Thanks again! In following your advice I came accross an old posting about a corrupt 'Download Program Files' directory in WINNT Directory (W2K). It seems if you show 'damaged' files it is a symptom of some kind of conflict. This is further confirmed by highlighting 'Dowload Program Files' directory & right clicking for properties. It is supposed to show in'contents' x amount of files & (this is important) '0 Folders'. Mine shows '1 Folder' which according to this news item confirms a conflict.
The only problem is I haven't got the foggiest idea how to resolve this conflict. The news articles resolution seems to apply only to W95 & 98 which gives you the option of booting to DOS.
I hope to research this tonight. Any help would be welcome.

It might help if you copied the NG post you found here (I tried a search but didn't come up with it).

Here is part of a NG post I did find, containing instructions to remove damaged Downloaded Program Files ActiveX control entries, in connection with WindowsUpdate problems:
FWIW, here is the entire NG post but since it aplies to Win98 you would have to make adjustments.

Here's what Microsoft sent me to help me get back on line with the Windows Update Site. Hope this helps...It's long but it works...
    Good Luck!! kcm

I'm sorry to hear that you are having trouble accessing the Windows Update page. We will try some troubleshooting steps to resolve this issue. We had just made some changes to the Windows Update Site a few days ago that's why you are receiving this error message. In order to have this issue resolved, we will need to clear all the Windows Update cached information on your
system. Outdated or corrupt files in these folders will disable a users ability to view or download from the Update Site. Please perform these steps in the order I have indicated below.

NOTE: You have done some of these steps, but please just do them again in the order displayed below.

    A. First, let's remove the Windows Update V3 controls;

The following steps will guide you through the process of removing the currently-installed ActiveX controls for the Windows Update Site residing in your system, which will allow the site to reinstall a new version the next time you connect to it.

    1- Click Start\Run
    2- Type "regsvr32 /u c:\windows\system\wuv3is.dll" (without the quotes) and
    click OK
3- Click Start\Find and select Files or Folders
In the Named field type "wuv3is.dll" then select C: from the "Look in" field
and make sure the option to search sub-folders is checked. Click Find now.
4- When "wuv3is.dll" appears in the list at the bottom, right-click on it
    and select Delete
5- You may close the Find Files or Folders window
    6- Click Start\Run
7- Type "C:\Program Files" (with the quotes) and click OK
8- Look for the folder WindowsUpdate then right-click on it and select
    Delete
9- Remove the CV3 class control file
    - click on Start and select Run
    - type "C:\Windows\downloaded program files" (without quotes) and click OK
-right click on the CV3 class file and remove/delete it.

    B. Check the status of your installed ActiveX controls. To view the status
    of these controls:

    1. Double Click on the "Internet" icon in your Control Panel.
    2. Click on Internet Options/General Tab
    3. Click on the "Settings" button within Temporary Internet Files section
    4. Click on the "View Objects" button that appears in the "Settings "
    windows.
    5. This should bring up your "Downloaded Program Files" window. If you
have Internet Explorer 5 installed, you will need to show all installed
controls by highlighting one, then choosing "File" from the menu bar and
clicking on "Show All Files "
    6. If there are any controls listed as 'damaged' under or "Unknown" under
the "Status" column, please try Removing them by right-clicking the damaged
controls and choosing the Remove option from the drop-down menu.

    C. Clear your Internet Explorer's cache and history by following these steps:

    - Click Star, point to Settings and click Control Panel
    - Doube click on Internet Options icon (or just Internet)
    - Under the General tab, click the "Delete Files..." button
    - Make sure offline content is selected, then click OK
    - Click on the "Clear History" button and click OK on the next prompt.
    - Click OK on the main Internet Options window.

    D. The next thing is to remove the "msdownld.tmp" folder

There might be temporary download files still left in the "C:\Windows\msdownld.tmp" folder. Let's go ahead and delete this folder by following these steps:

1- Right-click on Start and select "Explore "
2- Locate the Windows folder (on the left side) and click on the plus (+) sign to its left to expand it.
3- Locate the Msdownld.tmp folder, right-click on it and select delete.
4- You may now close Windows Explorer.

    D. We will also add the following information to your Trusted sites zone in your Security settings:

1- From within Internet Explorer, click the Tools (View for IE 4) menu option, then select Internet Options
2- Click the green "Trusted sites" icon (Select "Trusted sites zone" from the Zone pull down menu for IE 4)
3- Click the "Sites..." button (Click the "Add Sites..." button on IE 4.0)
4- Make sure the "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone" option is unselected
5- In the "Add this Web site to the zone" field, type

    http://*.microsoft.com then click Add
    http://*.conxion.com then click Add

    Click OK
    - Make sure that the Security Level is set to Low for the Trusted Sites Zone.
    - Click OK again on the Internet Options screen.

Close all windows, disconnect from the internet and reboot for the changes to take affect.

In addition, please disable any Anti-Virus protection software that you may be running. Anti-Virus software stops programs from writing to the registry in Windows and this is a required operation for some programs to install.

If the above steps does not resolve the issue, please proceed with the steps below.

    reinstall the Microsoft Virtual Machine

You may download a newer version of the Microsoft virtual Machine by visiting the following web site:

    http://www.microsoft.com/java/vm/dl_vm32.htm

1- Scroll down until you see the "Microsoft VM build 3167 (or 3186) for Windows 95/98 and Windows NT 4.0" link, and click on it
2- When you receive the prompt to either Open or Save to disk, select Save
to disk. You may save the file anywhere in your hard drive.
3- Once the download has finished, you may look for the file in the folder you saved it in and double-click it, this will begin the installation process.
4- When the installation is finished, please restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

    IE 5.5 Install Problems

For some stupid reason, whenever I try to install IE 5.5 atop IE 5 in Win 98 SE, I cannot load windows thereafter. I can load in Safe Mode and uninstall IE but I still must go back to a pre-install Registry and restore it to get back into business. When I do so, I get a message telling me that a file must be replaced. When (* has worked it's magic, Windows loads just fine but now sans IE 5.5.

When I installed 5.5 on my wife's computer also having Win 98 SE, install went beautifully first time.

This last time I tried, I not only closed or disabled all but Systray and Explorer, I also closed Zone Alarm while the download and install took place. D/L is fast anyway with cable.

Is there anywhere I can download the program and do a local install with cable disconnected and Windows `clean booted' w/o even Autoexec.bat, Config.sys, Win or Sys ini files loaded? All I can find is that silly setup control file of about 485K.

    Thanks.

    BUT......

    Thank you Alice.

I've gone back to ZNet but I still cannot find anywhere to DL IE 5.5 for local installation unless I accept the complete package. I regret that I did not make myself more clear at the outset.

I have no use for OE, NM etc. They just take up HD space.

If I restort to `on line' minimal install and risk no fire wall [remember I'm on cable so DL is fast], do you have any suggestions to how to ensure that Windows will load after; or, where the road black might be? Do you think it a good idea to do a `clean boot' and allow the install to proceed?

    Thanks.

Read through the ZDnet page at http://www.zdnet.com/products/stories/reviews/0,4161,2603931-4,00.html It says that
if you choose the Typical option the download and installation procedure will begin right away. On the other hand, if you choose the Minimal option, you'll see the Component Options screen. Then, instead of clicking NEXT, if you click the Advanced button you will get the option to download the installation files without actually running the install online.

I also found the following Microsoft article with more information:
Changes in Internet Explorer 5.5 Download Only Behavior (Q259676)
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q259676&GSSNB=1

The download link at ZDnet for IE5.5 was broken but you can either search ZDnet's downloads or go to Microsoft.

E5.5 Sp1 and IE5.5 Sp2 can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/archive/default.asp You might want to consider Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 2 which is also available. The same steps that the ZDnet page outlined to download the installation files should work.

Sorry I can't help more but when I installed IE5.5 it was from a CD-Rom I ordered from Micorosft; I installed IE5.5 Sp2 online. I do think it's a good idea to install IE from a download after a clean boot since at least you would be eliminating some potential sources of conflict.

Maybe you should try an IE repair. See the Microsoft KB article Description of the Internet Explorer Repair Tool (Q194177)

    DON'T AGREE RE DOWNLOAD

    Hi Alice

Re the first part of your message, I have twice tried to download the `mimimal' IE 5.5 to my HD w/o success. I believe we're both following the same path but somehow, arriving at different stations. Here's my sequence after clicking on the 500K download control file [I've DL'd two, one from Microsoft and one from ZNet]:

    Agreement - Accept
Install NOW or MINIMAL - Minimal
Minimal Options - select Advanced [10.4MB]
Download Only - OK [but it's FULL only]
    Advanced
    Download Only - OK
    Advanced
Download Only - I'm now cycling [40 years ago I'd have called it a DO-loop or Sub-loop.] And the only option is 28.4 MB with all the fringe elements which I don't want. There's no point in continuing as I cannot download the MINIMAL install files [10.4MB]

I'm sorry Alice but you and I are not getting the same results or we're miscommunicating.

As noted, I did find 5.5 on ZNet. And `yes' the link is broken [I assumed deliberately as ZNet seems to be focusing upon Ver. 6]

I've not had a chance to look further.

I'm assuming that you have no clue re Windows not reloading after a download install. Usually when I've had this happen in the past, I've gone step by step and found that if I don't load Norton, Windows loads. This time, checking NO to Norton did not make any difference.

    Thanks for trying.

    Welt,

The mskb article Changes in Internet Explorer 5.5 Download Only Behavior (Q259676) that I referenced earlier says
So, even though you only want a minimal install, you are forced to download the entire package to save it and install at a later time.

    I'M SORRY

I'm sorry Alice. I misunderstood you and should have gone the whole 9 yards rather than dealing with your message in pieces.

Since one goes to minimal install and then clicks Advanced, logic seems to imply that what will be downloaded will be `minimal'. In this day and age, I suppose it's too much to expect logic. No offense to you intended. If you studied Logic, then I think you'd agree the statement would read, `If X then Y '.

Perhaps I should go for 5.1 with the Sp package first. I only thought the security might be better with higher versions but then, I suppose patches are available. I'll consider this.

Thanks for the clarification and help Alice.

    5.1 WAS A NO GO

    Hi Alice

The bad news is that I DL'd IE 5.1 [minimum] pkg., did a `clean boot' [only Explorer loaded]and installed 5.1. Windows would not load: no way. I ran the Repair tool but it did not help. I have not the energy to run through the ste-by-step diagnosis so I simply uninstalled IE 5.1,restored this morning's Registry and that's how I am at the moment. There were no reports of files that had to be restored or replaced because of corruption or date either during or after the install.

I just don't understand this. As I said earlier, I istalled IE 5.5 into my wife's machine with the identical OS and without a single hitch.

I'm sure the answer is very simple...it's the finding it! Windows kept loading in VGA mode and the egg timer would flicker on and off and finally quit. I tried waiting and I tried shutting down and turning off the computer for a moment or so.

I can but hope that I can file my tax return `on line'. :)

    Hi Welt,

Sorry for your continuing problems. It must be very frustrating.

At least you now know it's not anything specific with IE5.5 since installing IE 5.01 sp2 causes the same problem. I'll look through the mskb and groups.google.com and if I find out anything I'll post back but you might want to start a new thread on your IE5 upgrade problems.

Be as specific as possible with exactly what happens. On my pc, for example, this is what happened after I rebooted following a custom install of IE5.5 over IE3.02 (on 9/12/00) which I did off-line, from cd-rom. I did empty my Temporary Internet Files before the install and manually deleted the cookies, then installed after a fresh reboot with a Ctrl/Alt/delete to close all
background programs except Explorer and Systray. I do not have Norton AV installed so I didn't have to worry about Autoprotect. By the way, I have my IE5notes posted at http://home.att.net/~wymette/programs/IE5notes.txt

Install finished. Rebooted with CD left in drive. got message that windows was setting up:
    Browser service
    Internet Tools
    Security
    System services
    Microsoft VM
    ------------
Got a box: Setting up personalized settings for...
    -IE 5.5 and Internet Tools
    (CD-Rom was accessed)
NOTE: new progam running in background: Loadwc.exe (later disabled in Startup Manager)
-it has to do with Windows Profiles and IE5.5.

Here is what happened when I installed IE5.5 sp2 online:

9/30/01 Installed IE 5.5 SP2 I did the online install. Besides the browser I did OE, VBS support, IE Help, Browsing Enhancements and ICW. The download was 10.676 MB and took about 40 minutes at 44K. The install itself was a no-brainer. After copying files (including a new Address book it seems) it backed up and updated configuration and got a message, "If you need to reinstall in the future, run Ie5setup.exe from C:\Windows Update Setup Files.... I clicked Finish and that restarted the computer. Got a Windows Update box saying that Windows is now setting up various components, then desktop loaded and got another notice about Personalized Settings. Started IE and got an MSN screen with "run once" in the title bar and clicked a box to keep the Language and country settings. In Help About IE it had Version 5.5.4807.2300 128-bit and
    Version SP2
