i also have an active profile on 6.2, but don't like 6.2 and want to continue to use 4.7
is there anyway i can recover my deleted 4.7 profile or at least import my 6.2 profile back into 4.7?
or do i need to create a new profile in 4.7 and start from scratch?

    Hi michael,

    The Bad News:
If you deleted your 4.7 Profile, and made no backup, then it is gone Sorry!

    The Good News:
You can salvage your Bookmarks, Address Book, and Mail!

    Bookmarks:
    With Netscape closed:
Open Windows Explorer and navigator to your 6.2.1 Profile
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profile\UserName\xxxxxxxx.slt
    Copy the bookmarks.html file

Now, navigate to your 4.7 Profile
    C:\ Program Files\Netscape\Users\UserName
Paste the bookmarks.html file in the folder
    Rename bookmark.htm (e.g.Xbookmark.htm)
    Rename bookmarks.html (from 6.2.1) to
    bookmark.htm

    Address Book:
Moving the Address Book from 6.x to 4.x can only be done by saving the 6.x Address Book as an .LDIF or .CSV file , and importing THAT file into 4.x ...

    Mail:
The mail folders (the ones with no extenstions) are the same format in both programs, and may be directly copied from one mail directory to the other, in Windows Explorer.

    michael,

I decided to try the Address Book solution, by saving as an .ldif file. Well, I'm here to tell you, that I couldn't get it to work. I tried several times to import the .ldif file into my Communicator 4.79 Address Book, and got nothing!

I wish I had tried to do this earlier, as it is recommended frequently on the Netscape 6 NG, by the Champions.

There is also another recommendation, which you may have to resort to, if you are unable to import the .ldif file into your Communicator. It is a program called "Dawn ". You can download it here:

Let us know how it goes.

    Ramona,
When you accidentially deleted you Netscape profiles, and if you did not delete actual files... that is all bookmarks and e-mails will still be there (as you have mentioned).

Couldn't you just re-create a profile with the same username and make sure it points to the same profile folder, and all old information will be right there.

(I haven't tried it myself. Can someone confirm it?)

    Antony,

Yes, if no files were deleted. My mindset was that michael had deleted his Users folder. If he only deleted the Profile, in Profile Manager, then he can do as you said, and retrieve the lost profile.

    4michael1,

I feel your pain. :( As Ramona can tell you, I recently went through the same thing. I had no luck in getting it back. What a pain! The silver lining was that it got me to start making a backup of my user folder. I just made a spot on my second drive for the backup. At least once a week, I copy my users folder over to that spot. It works good and now I have a little less to worry about when something goes wrong. I lost things that I can't replace, but no more.

Just food for thought as you rebuild your Netscape.

Remember to create your backups from time to time. Cherokee would have another good guide on how to create backups.
