    Hi guys

    Ok here is my problem.

My cable modem is on and the connection is on, since I called my cable isp and they said they "saw" my modem. It's plugged into my computer but it's like my computer isn't receiving the connection. my messenger services won't work, aol won't work, i can't get any websites to open...nothing. It's like the connection is not there.

THe tech support at the isp says I need to reinstall xp, but I think there might be another answer. See, the same thing happened a few days ago, I did a system restore to a week ago and the problem was fixed. Well the cable company was doing some work again outside and the problem started up again, but now I can't system restore any further back. So I think it's some kind of settings problem or something but I don't know what.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it but when I boot up the pc I get this error box:

    RUNDLL
    Error loading D:\Progra~1\NewDOT~1\NewDOT~1.DLL
The specified module could not be found.

    Don't know what that is.

Anyway I really don't want to have to reinstall so if anyone has a clue what could be going on here and could give me some advice I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

    Sol

I hate it when techs say things like that. If something they are doing causes you to need to reload your OS, they have major problems. But the techs is probably some poor schlep who is clueless.

Check your event logs for that error in English. If it still doesn't make sense, with the event open click on the icon below the up/down arrows (sends a text copy of the event to your clipboard) and post the thing here.

Are you connecting a single PC directly to the cable modem? If so, are you positive you have a patch cable wired the correct way? If the modem wants crossover and you have regular, it won't work. Or vice versa.

Do the following and post the contents of the resulting text file here.

    start~run~cmd
    ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig.txt

    Hi thanks for the resonse.

Yes I am connecting a single PC to the modem. And it's been connected for a long time now and working fine. This just popped up out of the blue once the cable guys were doing work outside. I mean everything should be wired correctly because it was working fine and then broke without me touching a thing.

I will run that command tonite when I get home and post the results tomorrow. Thanks for your help.

    Any more ideas anyone?

    That's quite an error.

The detail we will really need is elsewhere though. Should be in the event logs and probably the application log although possibly the system log.

My Computer icon and right-click. Then left click on manage and check in the event logs for an error or warning that sorta matches that error.

When you find one, open the event then click on the icon below the up/down arrows to send a text copy of the error to your clipboard and paste the results here.

    Hey guys, problem fixed!

LSP-fix did the trick. Turns out Newdot was the problem, it had messed up my winsock I guess.

As always, thanks for everyone's help, much appreciated.
