The situation is that audio in Windows media, Sound Forge, and any other programmes only work if Steinbergs Cubase SX/ VST has started. It's as though these Pro audio programmes open a gate that allows the sound to work, nothing actually gets to the card as I cannot see or hear a signal. Audio seems disabled, however it is enabled.

I am running XP (home), Pentium 4, 1.9Ghz processor, 40Gig Data Drive, 80Gig Audio Drive, Audiophile 2496 Sound Card (updated drivers).

I have tried reinstalling drivers, checked Audio Properties, services for WINDOWS AUDIO that is set to Automatic.

Cant think of anything else. PLEASE help me with a tweak of some sort! Thanks

Some of these recording programs set themselves as the default sound device in Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Sounds tab.

Using an M-AUDIO Sound card makes it not necessary to tweak this page.
