Don't let the few determine what the many must do in this country. Stop this insanit

When booting up Windows 98 (not SE) I get the following message
"Batmeter.dll file is linked to missing export setupapi.dll;SetupDiGetDeviceInterfaceDetailA"

I followed the directions in MS Knowledge Base Article-232489, renamed the specified files and extracted them from a Win98SE CD and installed them in C:\Windows\System, but this did not correct the problem. I don't have access to the original Win98 CD. Is there any other way to fix this problem? Where can I get an original Win98 CD?

Why do you want to stick with '98 when you have a '98SE CD ?
Installing 98SE would most likely correct the problem and
    generally improve your computing.

I should have mentioned, I'm thelping a friend. I'm reluctant to install W98SE as I'm not sure if I'd create more problems.

I know how to extract files from a program CD, but don't know if the extracted files alone would solve the problem.

The error message about being linked to missing export can be caused by the wrong version of the setupapi.dll, not just because it is not there. The wrong version may not have the process "SetupDiGetDeviceInterfaceDetailA" in it or one that is incompatible.
Putting 98SE files into the original 98 could cause problems, versionitis.

Eleanor316--Depending on how your friend got Win98FE (and especially if she got it pre-installed when she bought the PC) you may find all the original Win98FE files in C:\Windows\Options\Cabs in a bunch of folders named WIN98_XX.CAB (XX = two digits).
The easiest way to reinstall a file from these is to use System File Checker and the "Extract one file" option. Enter C:\Windows\Options\Cabs when asked "Restore from ". And substitute the name of the file you want to Extract for rasapi32.dll in these instructions.

It didn't occur to me to try to extract it from the C drive. If it was missing ,I figured it wasn't on the C drive at all. I'll try that.

Just out of curiosity, has any1 else noticed how much of the problems here supposedly come about from "helping out a friend" or some such excuse? :) Are we all such cowards that we can't admit when we're actually working on our own PCs? :D

To get back on point, merlin's point was not to install selected SE files, but to do a full upgrade to 98SE, which as he said, would fix the problem, and result in a better all-around computering.

Which reminds me, who came up with the term computing for playing or working on a PC? Sounds to me like you're working on math problems at high school! :p

One more thing: Eleanor316, could you please explain the title of this thread? Is it an attempt to create more participation, a political statement vs Bush, Blair, and co., or something else that I have not thougt of?

Not true!! If I were referring to my machine (WinXP) I would admit it. I'm a computer tutor and troubleshooter for my retirement community. Proof that you're never too old (71) to learn something new.

I finally found an original program CD for Windows 98 First Edition.

Thanks for all who responded to my problem.
