I've been putting together a computer, all was going fine until the monitor went black. It works fine on another machine. Tried another monitor and after awhile it too goes to sleep. The motherboard is a ap53. I was advised to clear the CMOS and then go into setup and change a few things, but that did not work. The monitor was still black, so I couldn't see anything to get into setup. Everytime I plug the monitor into the processor it goes black. Shuts down completely to the point of having to uplug it from the electrial for a while, before it will turn on again. Anybody got any ideas? Matter of fact, I have 2 processors with the same motherboard, and they are both doing the same thing.

    Maybe

I had the same problem, or symptoms I should say. My hard drive had a virus and after cleaning it off, all was well.

Yes, some type of virus or bug sounds feasible.

Were the changes you made to the settings in Power Management? Try changing the Windows Power Management settings to "Never ". My computer crashes when it goes to "System standby" (Win 98).
My system works OK using the Power scheme: "Always On ".

You can try disabling the Power Management in your BIOS setup, but Windows should(?) take control of it and changes in the BIOS setup should have no effect.

    will try again

I had tried a different hard drive, thinking the problem was in the hard drive. I even uplugged everything that wasn't needed, with the thought it might be causing touble. That did not work.
I can't change anything in the bios/setup........I can't see anything. I was advised to clear the CMOS, which I did. But that was of no help either. With a black monitor, you can't do much of anything.
I put a post in at A-opens disscussion board, but have gotten no response. I also read another post there that sounded much the same. They too did not get a response.
Thanks for all the suggestions and help.

Sorry misread. Apparently you cannot get video at all.

The video card may have become dislodged. Try reseating the video card(s).

    Other things to try:
Clean the connectors on the video card with Contact Cleaner.
Swap the video card to another slot.
Swap the video cards between the two machines (although it may not help if it is exactly the same problem in both).
Do you know of another machine with which you can try the video card? (Will tell you if it is the card or the motherboard).
Is the connector for the monitor seated all the way?

    I've tried

I've tried numerous video cards, in different slots with the same results. I have two the same motherboards AP53 and they are BOTH doing the same thing! I'm sure this must be some sort of simple thing, that we are overlooking. But I don't know what. Everything was running and working fine until one day this happened................? I'm thinking it must be something with the motherboard because both of them are doing the same thing. Do you know if this is a known problem with this particular motherboard?
I know the video card is OK, and I know the monitor is OK. I appreciate all the help.

Running pretty thin on troubleshooting ideas now:confused: .

Unless it is the motherboard (or something simple) as you say.

Power Supply: could reduce the load on it by removing PCI / ISA cards and even all the drives. If you want to try another, it is AT form factor...look at the motherboard power connector.

RAM: If you have all the slots filled then try the basics. I think your moterboard takes matched pairs of 72 pin SIMM. So just try one pair in bank 0.

Can only think it may have been a power surge that has cooked your boards (hope it isn't!).

    Luck

    Monitor just going black!

I'm having the same sort of problem. I was running windows 98, but started having problems, so upgraded to xp.

Now after a while my monitor just switches itself off and I have to switch off all power for a couple of hours before I can use the pc again.

If I try to switch on too soon the monitor switches itself off again, I also notice that the time clock in the bottom right hand corner is wrong, I keep correcting it but it seems to default to Feb 2002???

Date suggests battery, try replacing it.

Only other time I've seen a similar (sort of) situation is when the RAM was not being recognised properly by the BIOS. If you have Norton Utilities it has a test for RAM.

Does it occur at a particular stage (program loading) or completely ramdom?

May also have to do with the upgrade, you may need to format.

It happens about 2 hours after I switch on and then goes off. It wont let me switch on again for about an hour and then it's ok
