I hope I explain this so everyone can understand what I'm trying to do. When you ignore a dialog box you'll get default beep(WindowsXPDing.wav) iget this same sound just before the shut down music plays. I have the default beep shut off. Is there a way to correct this problem so I can turn on the default beep again without having to hear it just before the shut down music plays. Thanks again it seems I'm always asking for help maybe some day I'll be of assistance to someone else.

If I understand what you are asking, in the control panel open "sounds and audio devices ", click the "sounds" tab, and you can set whatever sound (including none) you want for each of a long list of events.

I have it shut off. Im just curious if there is a fix, not that I miss that particular sound. Instead of worrying about this trivial stuff, maybe I should take a typing course. It takes me forty minutes to edit what I type. Thanks all.

Have you checked to make sure there isn't some other event set to use the same sound?

How would you check to find out if another event is using it. I know when you ignore a dialog box you get that sound.

Look in the same place Newt spoke of. In the list under program events each item that has a speaker next to it is being used. If you click on one of those it will show you the sound that's being used for that event. Look for one that's using the windows xp ding.wav. If there is one, it may help you understand what it is what's happening when you hear the sound.

I know what event the WindowsXPDing.wav is assigned to it's the Default beep. But it still sounds just before the WindowsXPShutdown.wav sounds. I already have the Default beep turned off. I was just curious if there is a way to correct this so I can turn on the Default beep without it sounding before the WindowsXPShutdown.wav plays.

I understand what you're saying but I don't think you're understanding me. Any of the events can be assigned any of the sounds. It's possible that another event is assigned the same sound as the default beep event. If for example, you were to also have the windows ding.wav assigned to "close program" , you'd hear it every time you closed a program. You would also hear it (probably several times) when you shutdown windows because of the various programs being closed before it shuts down. The source of the sound could be caused by some other event using the same sound.

If you are an old southern boy like me, you could even load Dixie.wav and have that as your "shutdown sound ". Then at least you'd know that any other noises were not specifically caused by the shutdown but by some other event.

I check every event that has a speaker next to it. There is only one assigned with WindowsDing.wav and thats Default Beep. I changed the sound of default beep and whatever sound I assign to it that sound plays just before the WindowsXPShutdown.wav plays. Weird isn't it.
