    Hi guys:)

After reformatting and reinstalling windows XP 5.1 2600 I can not shut the computer off automatically. If I go to start/turn off computer it well get as far as "it is now safe to turn off your computerâ€, I have to push the power button to shut it off. I looked in control panel power options and I can’t see anything to automatically shut off my PC.:(

I never had this problem before the reinstall; it would shut itself off like any other computer.

Anyone have any ideas? I’m stumped.

AMD650, 256 Megs ram, MSI motherboard, windows XP, office XP, AVG, zone alarm.

    Thank you for your time!

Start; Control Panel; Performance and Maintenance; Power Options; APM tab; put a check in the box. Enable Advanced Power Management Support.

Thank you for the reply Sled.:)

What I am trying to say, cense the format/reinstall I don’t have an APM tab.
The only thing on my power options is, power schemes, advanced, hibernate and UPS, I don’t understand (or know) what UPS is but nothing is selected.

I would like to know how to install the APM option so I can get the computer to power it’s self down, this thing has me stumped.

I have my Windows XP CD, is there some way I can pull it off the CD? In other words how do I install "Enable Advanced Power Management Support?â€

    Thank you for your time.

UPS stands for Uninterrupted Power Supply, a box that looks like a car battery that you plug everything into and can keep things running for a few minutes in the event of a power failure, or has software to do a shutdown. (They are also effective at maintaining a steady power supply to the system- no fluctuations make a happier computer!)

Reboot, and hit the delete key to get the startup menu. Make sure APM is enabled in there. You have to work with arrow keys, tab and enter, but that might solve your problem. Good luck.

Hey Tom Cat, I have the same problem, but have been living with it as i only use that pc now and again. i fail to see hoe APM will help as that is power management whilst using th pc and as for UPS, well u won't have one of them either. I am fairly certain there is a BIOs setting that controlls what happens when u hibernate/shutdown.....I'll have another fish about and see if i can get a result. Anyone else with any ideas?

nhal1uk - ??? Why would he for sure not have a UPS? I certainly do on both my PCs at home although I don't have the serial connection to the PC for power management.

I fail to see hoe APM will help

I used to have an APM tab on my power options, after the reinstall (on a clean drive, I formatted it) I don’t have a APM tab, I know I used to have one (cuzz this is my first XP computer and I had to check it to get auto power down) I know it was checked.;)

What I need to know is can I reinstall just the APM, or do I have to reinstall windows?

All the correct bios options are turned on, and yes I looked many times and tried playing with the BIOS settings with no luck.:(

Like I said this has me stumped,HOW COULD XP NOT INSTALL THE "ADVANCED POWER MANGMENT TAB

Anyone have any ideas or thoughts about this? Any input would be appreciated.

    Thank you for your time.

PS I don’t have or use the UPS option.
