I am tired of fighting Windows ME. Can I upgrade from ME to XP and not lose my stored information? I am on a cable modem, will I still be connected after the upgrade? everytome I fool with ME it requires a call to Roadrunner to get reconnected. Finaly does XP fix the many known problems with ME? I run 98 at work and love it. Will I be happy with XP? many thanks

Unless I read wrong the above says you are having problems with ME and you would like to put XP over top of it.

I will more than likely shock some readers that know me but in this case my personal answer is NO.

But my first question would be.

Do you have enough room on your present C: drive for XP. As it does require quite a bit more disk space.

To put one OS overtop of the other requires the existing to be as error free as humanly possible.

    I agree with 98 ( I have 98 SE ) being great.

Once you get XP in and get used to its different ways it is OK.

I put XP overtop of SE and it is OK. But I don not see it as realy being any better than SE.

I fought with ME for three days and then dumped it. XP is by far superior to ME.

Sorry for not providing enough information. I would like to dump ME and load XP. I have plenty of resources to run XP also. There is not much on the system except for some JPGs which I already have saved to disks. Is there an easy way to save my interent connection settings, address book, firewall and anti virus programs and transferr them to the new system? I had to dump and reload ME once and being slightly illiterate with operating systems it was a magor pain to get things up and going again. I noticed on the XP page here that with XP there is a provision to do this. Thanks again.

    That does make a difference.

Now I would say GO FOR IT.

It may take a while to get used to XP but in the end I believe you will find t better than ME.

As far as the AV, Firewall etc goes. Starting fresh from the ground up is a better way to go.

The e-mail stuff I can't help with because I use Eudora and it is 100% on another drive where it has been since that days of Win95.

Start fresh. A clean install is less likely to have problems. To save your address book, open WE, Doc & Sttings, Your Name, Application Data, Microsoft, Address Book- then locate your WAB file. I usually copy it into My Docs along with My Favorites (Internet bookmarks) and burn a cd of the whole thing. Then later you can import it back to OE on your new install. In fact, I do this about once a month, because I can't quit playing with this durned thing, and every now and then, I crash it, and crash it bad. But, hey, you can play hard when you have nothing to lose! XP will determine your LAN automatically- on boot it detects your modems. Any adjustments can be made from Network Connections in the Control Panel. BB is right- install all your Internet Security fresh. (I do mine after the OS install and BEFORE I turn on the modem) My daughter's computer is ME, and it is not as efficient or user friendly as XP, IMO. If her OS dies, I will not reinstall ME.

I also do the install of AV and Firewall BEFORE plugging in the modem. And make then the FIRST things to check for updates.

Any Windows updates etc. can come later AFTER the AV & Firewall.

And if I am changing AV or Firewall I UNPLUG the Modem till they are re-installed.

I upgraded to XP from ME a few months ago ,with a little help from the good people on this board. I highly recommend this move. The only crashes I've had on XP is from Diablo II so before I play this game I take some precautions... Meanwhile ME would crash almost daily for one reason or another. It is a tough OS to live with.

One thing though. My computer is two years old and when I called Dell and told them I was upgrading to XP they mentioned that I needed to upgrade the BIOS. They were very helpful in this regard, sent me to a download site where I downloaded and then executed the BIOS upgrade. If you need a BIOS upgrade, make sure you do it while running ME. It will not do any harm to your computer or files. Then get the XP upgrade and preferably do a clean install... IE, format your HD and make sure you have your ME CD. The XP upgrade will ask you for it.

    good luck,

    butchoh,
I migrated from Windows ME to Windows XP Professional and I didn´t even consider doing an upgrade.

What if You not only get to keep Your settings but also your Gremlins ...... :( ...... ? You never know ...... ...... !

My recommendation is to make the whole effort now ...... ...... it will pay off later ...... :D ......

    On the other hand.

I upgraded SE to XP Pro and If I did not know that I did I would not know.

Very little if any difference. Other than lots more disk space used to do the same job.

I am not sorry that I upgraded as XP will soon be needed anyway. Like it or not. Hardware and software are switching support to XP very quickly.

But also I did not upgrade to fix problems. I had none to fix. That can make a big difference.

Now that that is said done. Dinner is done. We gotta get ready for our Tuesday evening Golf. HOPING that I can beat my Wife. We play Skins with a $1,000,000 purse. The last two weeks my Wife has taken at least $650,000 of it. I sure wish it were real LOL. But over the years we have Multi Millions worth of fun. Win or lose.

Last week I think only 5 holes were really won.

butchoh - I'll chime in to reinforce comments from several folks.

If you are having problems with your present OS, DO NOT "upgrade" by intalling the new OS over your problem system.

I also highly recommend XP to you. But as a fresh install. Format to get rid of any traces of the present stuff and then install.

BIOS update before you do this is also an excellent suggestion. And do be prepared for the possibility that some of your hardware components may not run with XP. They probably will but some that were fine with earlier OS versions simply will not perform with XP or will not be reliable.

You can check the Microsoft web site for a fairly complete listing of components that are fine with XP. Any that are not on that list are iffy. They may be fine but they may not.
