Some internet sites not working on my computer

I have a small network 4 computers conected to a router that is conected to a cable modem for internet access. The router also works as a DCHP server. There are 2 win2k systems, a winXP and a winME. My problem is that some internet sites do not work from one of the win2k computers. Most sites work fine but every now and then i'll come accross a site that won't work. These sites all work fine from the other ones. Its not something that changes either once i find a site that won't work it never works from that computer. I thought at first that it might be a cache problem so i disabled the internet cache but that didn't work. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing this? any help would be appricated. Check the hosts file on that PC.

 

No i've checked my host file it's not that. Sorry for the delay in answering hurricane isabell kept me of line for 4 days.

 

Isabel surely did bash some folks. We were missed but barely. 20-30 miles away and they took damage. Glad you are finally back at least enough to get online.

The problem is puzzling. There are a very limited number of things that could cause that specific behavior (good on other LAN PCs but not on the one) and with DNS caching turned off and the hosts file not redirecting those sites to never-never land, the most likely culprits are not the cause.

It can't be any local cache on your router or by your ISP or all your PCs would be affected. Hmmmmm.

To eliminate all the major sources of this, temporarily do the following (and yes, it does duplicate things you've already done):

- check for a firmware update for the router/switch and install the latest if you don't already have it
- start~run~ipconfig /flushdns
- rename hosts to hosts.sav
- rename lmhosts to lmhosts.sav
- turn off any firewall you have running on the PC.

If that does the job, try turning on the firewall then renaming hosts and then lmhosts back to their normal names.

If that doesn't work, there might possibly be a configuration issue of some sort. Do the following from both your W2K systems and post the results here - and please don't mask any values.

start~run~cmd
ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig.txt

Then just copy the contents of the c:\ipconfig.txt file and paste it here. Identify the one that works and the one that is causing problems.

If that doesn't show anything strange, you'll need to try completely removing networking from the PC by booting to safe mode, removing the NIC from device manager, shutting down and removing the physical NIC, restarting without it, back down and reinstall the NIC then set things up again.

 

You could also try and modify your MTU settings on that machine, use a program called DR TCP and check what your current MTU and RWIN settings are on a machine that works with the websites and cross reference with the machine(s) that don't

MTU can sometimes affect some websites and not others, it can also stop email and uploads from working correctly.

 

I tried the first suggestion and it didn't work so here is the ipconfig /all from the computer that is not working.

Nothing looks wrong to me, let me know if you see anything. I tried downloading Dr. TCP (the filename was DRTCP021.exe) but MTU field was blank on both the problem and working computers. I guess i'll try removing the NIC next. Let you know what happens. Thanks for all ur help

 

I agree that everything looks fine. Thought it would but we've run into some strange quirks in the ipconfig settings in the past and always like to take a look.

I agree about removing networking services and the NIC from the problem machine and starting fresh. Hopefully that will fix things for you. If not, you may need to consider wiping the machine (even reformatting the partitions) and loading the OS again.

Something is certainly broken and I'm afraid I can only offer guesses at this point.
