I would still give some thought to running Norton DiskDoctor on any and all drives/partitions.

    Hi stitch,

Had given you up for lost :) Well done - you can 'up' your experience level now :D

Modems can be a bit tricky - you almost certainly need to load the driver. Do you by any chance have a modem driver disk. If not have a look in Device Manager and see if the modem is recognised - probably not, but if it is post the name/type here.

No real problem with COM 2 (modem is on COM 2 on my 98 m/c), but the modem install disk may well put it on COM 3

i do have the driver but for some reason it didnt like it. It went to a blue screen and said.......
A fatal exception OE has occured at 0028:FF02D191. The current application will be terminated
Press any key to terminate or control alt and delete to restart. pressed any key and it shut itself down. got it started in safe mode and took out driver working fine again now

Here is a little quirck I have noticed about bad install of modems with 98. If you have done it at least twice and removed the modem from the Device Manager, take a look in Control Panel\Modems and remove any modems from there also. The modem must be removed from the Device Manager first. An extra entry in the Control Panel\Modems will cause some problems.

Your last post indicates to me that your computer couldn't boot from the floppy and therefore bypassed it and tried to boot into Windows again from the hard drive. If this is the case, then the Windows Install disk is corupted. Once you can get a good Windows setup boot floppy, you'll be given four options: 'Start Windows Setup? ", Start computer with CD ROM support' and 'Start Computer without CD ROM'. Choose the 'Start Windows with CD ROM support. Go here and do an fdisk and delete the present DOS partition. Escape out and reboot. Once it goes back and boots to the floppy, choose 'Start Windows Setup'. REMEMBER, DOING AN FDISK and REFORMATTING will ERASE EVERYTHING ON THE HARD DRIVE. Follow instructions on installation.

Proceed at risk of deleting everything on your hard drive.

Can't see the relevance of this post at this stage, except to confuse. What had you in mind?

I stand corrected with head bowed.... I thought I was replying to 'Stitches' Thread, Windows 98, 'help', having problems installling Windows 98SE. I seem to have answered the WRONG THREAD. I can see how this would be very confusing to this thread.

    Duster....
