Suddenly, when some applications are opened they do not produce any display. Looking in the task manager verifies that the application is running, but it cannot be seen, etc. Some additional squirrely behavior. Using Windows 2000 version 5.00.2195 Service Pack 4.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

First suggestion - get on the Housecall site and run a full virus scan.

After that and if the scan is clean, check your event logs for any entries that look like the pertain to the issue.

Is it always the same apps? Did it start soon after you applies SP4?

Installed SP4 on 8/5, but this problem is only in last couple of days. Ran my eTrust EZ antivirus again yesterday and it found one instance of the 'exploit.trojan' (see entry from my logfile below) and deleted it. I am unable to see my event log, because it is one of the things which when clicked does not display.

    C:\Documents and Settings\mrulison\.jpi_cache\file\1.0\Dummy.class-1012b178-3c542edf.class - Java.ByteVerify.exploit trojan. Deleted.

I think first thing I'd do is get a 2nd opinion, as it were, from an online AV scanner like housecall.

    After that try start~run~sfc /scannow and then re-apply SP4.

A little surprising if that virus did any damage to you since the hole in the M$ VM that it exploited was supposed to have been fixed in SP4.
