    Running Win me on emachines 633i Celeron, 64 mb ram
    Monitor= HP Ergo Ultra VGA
    Vid adapter= Intel 82810
    Have had recurring problem with screen going black (!) when res is set to 1024x768: just kind of implodes and goes black without warning. Only solution is re-boot and force to safe mode, re-load vid adapter, re-boot again, and stay at 800x600 or less.....except that usu after 3-4 days, I can resume using 1024x768 with no prob.
    But that's not the real prob now (tho I'd love to figure it out)
    Went thru this process abt 4 days ago, downloaded most recent vid adapter from Intel download site (have done this before), now only way machine will run at close to normal speed is in 16-color (not 16-*bit*, but old 16-color) mode: i.e., lowest res/colors avail. ANY other mode and it runs way, way, way sloooowww....like 8 minutes to boot, apps load way slow, explorer useless because of slowness. What the heck did I do?
    I would call myself low intermediate user: old DOS-head who knows just enough to do whatever I did... which was?????

    pete21601 Hi
    I never experienced that symptom when we had the 82810..
    the Intel 82810 uninstall and install is version specific.
    in other words instructions are included with each and are different for each. having to uninstall old before installing new

    Well the proper way is to first get windows to a generic VGA display adapter,Usually<<<< Usually that can be done by disabling it in device manager then restarting..

    then remove and uninstall old adapter software and without restarting yet remove from device manager all display adapters except for the generic one currently in use...

    But here is what worked for us
    Boot to safe mode ,in device manager, remove all display adapters,don't restart if prompted until all are removed and new one is installed, Uninstall any old version Intel graphics adapter.
    then install the latest Intel vid adapter drivers,,,,restart windows and it should >will< put back what it needs, let it search for and find the proper drivers.
    Don't have control panel open when uninstalling anything that has an applet in control panel, and if you have control panel set to expand on the start menu first set it not to..
    Lonny PS and get more ram ,its cheap.
