Does anyone have an idea what program creates the following file:

    McV###.tmp

The ###'s change on each of the temp file and the files are usually massive (1-5 gigs)

    Example:

    McV247.tmp
    McV258.tmp
    etc. etc.

    Thanks,
    Cary

Are you running McAfee Virus Scan? I was running this until this afternoon, and experienced the same problems that you are describing.

I was having MASSIVE disk writes until I stopped all McAfee processes. Once I did that, the disk writes magically stopped.

I am de-installing all McAfee apps for one week until I figure out if they were the culprit.

(Oh, and scanning my system with SpyBot Search & Destroy only revealed cookies, no apps.)

Let me know -- I'm very curious to find out if this is what's been plaguing my system, as well.

    Scott,

Yes, I am running McAfee. I was thinking that was the culprit based on the temp file names. I sent an email to McAfee today to clarify that issue with McAfee. Why do I need McAfee to prevent problems from viruses when I suspect their program is doing as much damage. I just deleted 20 gigs (yes, gigs not megs) of McV... temp files from my temp directory.

I did the same thing yesterday -- deleted over 10 GB of temp files from my disk. I had wondered why my > 20 GB c: was reporting full when I have well over 8 GB available to it.

Let me know what McAfee says -- if they are looking for corroboration, I can provide that for you.

This only seems to happen when I download email through Microsoft Outlook with McAfee Virus Scan enabled -- and only cropped up recently.

    Mysterious tmp files

Add me to the list of people having the problem of the reappearing tmp files. My first one was 55 GB in size !! I have run at least 4 virus programs and have not found any viruses. I run spybot daily also, no problems there either.

Once I found the tmp file, I deleted it. Then when I booted up again a 20 GB tmp file appeared. This happened twice, then it seemed to be ok. Tonight, the tmp files are starting to appear again. I've asked everyone I know and no one has a clue about these Mv##### tmp files. I'm going to shut down my mcafees for a few days also since this and Outlook seem to be what we all have in common. I'll keep my eye on this board in case anyone can solve it.

Searching around on the net and putting together the various descriptions of this McAvee temp file problem, it looks like McAfee creates them only when the email scanning portion of the program is enabled. Turn that off and the temp file creation seems to stop.

So far, I haven't found anything explaining how to use the email scan and avoid the space-eating temp files, though.

I searched through McAfee's support site briefly. Apparently, they aren't acknowledging the problem.

I don't use Outlook. It may not be program specific, but email scans as a whole as Miz indicated. I searched for an answer at McAfee's sight with no luck. I still haven't received a response from McAfee and suggest that ya'll send them emails as well so they don't think I'm some kinda nut.

    Hi Folks

This Post is different but shares similarities. Has a cause / cure / discussion on a 200 screen network per tmp files and McAvee. The tmp files are generating "McAvee update information" that apears to be called by "EPO Shields" during the logon script. The post starter "xumababe" has 3 post stating... problem, cause/cure, and final work around. This APPEARS to be site/program/network SPECIFIC to his situation. I'm only posting this thread to offer other avenues of thought and pursuit.

Yet another post, but this one appears identical, suggests it is related to virus scan coupled with a new Mcafee program called "wormstopper ". Post starter "Partiers_com" was able to cure the problem by reinstalling McAvee... at least for now.

    Dennis and Miz,

Thanks so much from me also. Just home on lunch right now, but this really looks like it will help us figure it out.

    I appreciate your help.

    McAfee Fesses Up

McAfee's is finally owning up to causing this problem. I've been reading about it on the mcafee boards. They're working on a solution :) Here's the post from the tech there.

    ---------------------------
I've received enough customer samples on this issue and we're in the process of escalating it to the developers.

A workaround to this issue is to disable the McVSEscn.exe process every time that you reboot. (end quote)

    -----------------------------
I'll keep watching the mcafee boards and post what I see for anyone who can't access them.

Still no response from the excellent customer service representatives of McAfee. So much for their "24 hour" response deadline. Can you say "denial ".

edit...didn't see the previous post, but appears my email is in the stack with the rest.

    Cary,

The only response I see is the moderator of their boards asking people to be the guinea pigs and try the fix. I'm not interested in doing that. I'll wait for the final version.

    Over 21Gb used

 These temporary files are mammoth.

I discovered them after running defrag, because two files representing over 30% of my huge hard drive couldn't be defragged.

I attempted to disable the new features in McAfee. I used to update the virus protection monthly, but have switched to daily because of the rash of bugs recently. I guess I should go back to monthly. I've never gotten a virus that caused this much time to fix.

I'm using McAfee virus scan online and it doesn't allow me to turn off features, as far as I'm aware. Recently it added a button to Outlook and two worm and script blasters I'd like to disable. I'd also like disable the automatic update. With the most recent patch it turned automatic update on and I see no way to turn it off.

Am I just missing something in SecurityCenter?

I uninstalled McAfee and the temp files have not reappeared.

Only thing I can tell ya is:

Wonder if McAfee will send me a refund....I didn't think so either.

    Good news

This put out by the hottest computer tech in the biz...Kim Komando...

AND NOW FOR TODAY'S TIP... McAfee's huge temporary files

On Sept. 4, I ran a question from Butch, in Greenville, MS, who was using
McAfee's anti-virus software. Each time it ran, it created a huge temporary file.
He scans his system every morning at 3 a.m. Because he was doing it daily,
the temporary files mounted quickly, filling his hard drive.

Butch contacted McAfee's customer support via instant messaging. He said he
was told that the anti-virus software did create the files, and that he was
    responsible for removing them.

We contacted McAfee, which said it had never heard of such a problem. The
temporary files were supposed to be deleted automatically when the virus scan was
complete. McAfee said Butch's problem had not appeared during beta testing.
But after Butch's report, others said they had the same problem.

McAfee confirmed on Wednesday that it had found and resolved the problem. A
software patch has been developed and is being sent to McAfee customers through
the company's push technology. Using that, McAfee ships the fix directly to
customers' computers. A notice pops up on the customer's screen that a patch is
    ready to be installed.

If you are using McAfee's software, watch for the pop-up notice. Simply
follow the instructions to patch your software. McAfee said that about 2 million
customers were affected by the problem.

    See you tomorrow!
    Kim :)

Yep, Cary. I got my update this morning... I'm still skeptical though so I'll keep my eye out for the tmp files.

Please post if you have any more problems. We noticed in our office that it apparently only effects Windows XP.
