Got this all done and it looks like my theory is correct. I installed NS 6.2.1 and copied the files over as needed and it wouldn't work. Tried several different things, all to no avail. Then I installed NS 4.78 and tried again and it worked like a charm. So, it kinda looks like you have to have one of the NS 4's installed for it to work. Arkie, if you don't get it going and want to try a stand alone mail checking program I did a quick search and came up with this free one from PC Magazine. You might check it out to see if it suits your needs. Sorry I haven't got a better answer for you but it kinda looks like it's your only choice unless you want to install NS 4 which seems to be a bit much if it's only for the mail checker. Don't know; you'll have to decide.
Romona, I haven't had NS 6 installed since the first or second version (I've been an IE fan for a long time now) and I have to admit that it seems much more polished than before. Pages load quickly and everything seems to work so far but then this is only the first time I've used it so.... Guess I'll have to play with it a bit before I find the bugs in it and get mad at it. :D If nothing else at least we know the answer if this question should ever come up again.

    Zander,

Thanks for the feedback, and the confirmation of your theory.... that Netscape 4.7x must be present in order for the mail notification (Nsnotify.exe) to work.

That was not made clear in either of the workarounds that I found on the Netscape NG. I will make this clear on my web page:
    Mail Notification Workaround

    Another Mail Notification program:

I tried renaming Netscape6.exe to Netscape.exe but still get the red X over nsnotify.exe.

I just had one Netscape6.exe file in the Netscape folder.
I seem to have a problem with search on XP. Sometimes it shows files and other times it doesn't. I never saw anything like that on W-95. But heck it may be me. :)

The stand alone mail checking program at PC Magazine is not listed for XP... so I'm not sure if I should try it.

The other one, Eprompter seem to have a very long agreement with too many people involved. I just wasn't comfortable with their agreement.

I may download a copy of NS 4.7 to see if I can get it to work like you did.

Thanks to you both for all the help.

Reading arkie's last post made me remember something I didn't mention before. It was not necessary for me to rename Netscape6.exe to Netscape.exe. All I did was go into the options for nsnotify and point it at Netscape6.exe and it worked fine that way. Not sure what all the renaming in the other articles is about. Perhaps nobody's ever tried without renaming it (hard to believe). Anyway, thought I'd post this for those who read this thread in the future. Sorry about the program arkie. Forgot you were using xp. Keep looking and I'm sure you'll find something. Anybody else know of any for xp?

    arkie,

I tried renaming Netscape6.exe to Netscape.exe but still get the red X over nsnotify.exe.

Take the shortcut to Nsnotify.exe out of your Start Menu.

Once you are connected to the Internet, open it by either clicking on the file from Windows Explorer, or make a shortcut on your Desktop. Or if WinXP has a QuickTray, make a shortcut there.

    As Zander reports:
    1. You need Communicator installed
    2. Copy two files: nsnotify.exe and nsmailui.dll from the C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program folder
    3. Paste the two files into the C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape 6 folder

I just had one Netscape6.exe file in the Netscape folder.

Well, that clears up that mystery, and thanks for letting me know! :D

    =========
    EDIT: 12:40 a.m. CDST
Be sure that the target is correct for Nsnotify. Right click the icon in your System Tray, and select "Options ".
Click on the "Launching Mail" tab.
Place a tick in the radio button next to "Path to Netscape.exe.
In the Target location select: C:\Program Files\Netscape 6\netscp6.exe
Send yourself an email to test the mail notification!
    =========

    Zander,

Well, shoot fire, common sense tells you that you shouldn't have to rename the netscp6.exe file! I'm not sure how renaming the file got into the equation, or what the poster's thinking was. At any rate, I removed the renamed file from the Netscape 6 folder, and made a test run, and the red flag doth wave!

Thanks for all the feedback, it is much appreciated.

    Ramona :D

Something else I discovered (guess I should have thought of this before too). You can designate any program you want in nsnotify's options and it will open it. Kinda useful for those that use OE or some other email program. OE does check the mail for you but you have to keep it open all the time. Using nsnotify you can close OE and save a bunch ram etc. Might be handy for those that are short of that type of thing. By the way, I did mean any program. If it trips your trigger you can point it at solitaire and use it to launch the game. :D

Do you suppose this thread will ever end? :p

    Hi Zander & arkie,

I guess this thread will end when we quit playing with this component.

I followed these instructions: How do I get NSnotify (Netscape Mail Notification) to launch automatically.

Thought I would give it a whirl, as arkie had a red X on the NSnotify icon in the system tray.

I encountered the same thing; however, after having Netscape open for a few minutes, maybe a bit longer, the red X disappeared and NSnotify became enabled. Just happened on that KB Article when searching for another solution.

Cool that you can use the feature with any program!

If I don't find another mail checking program that I like better I will install Communicator on my computer. I will then use all the good information that you have been posting.

    Guestion about installing 4.8:
Is it correct that I install it in another folder?

My wife is using W-95 and Communicator 4.8 and she jokes about my W-XP and 6.2 on my new computer. :)

I like IE browser best but I prefer Netscape mail.

    Thanks for the help.

    arkie,

If you are thinking about installing Communicator, then I would go with 4.79, as it is geared for Windows XP, and fewer bugs than 4.78.

Yes, you can install it in a separate directory. I should add that my Netscape 6.2.1 and Communicator 4.79 both reside happily in the C:\Program Files\Netscape folder. It's your choice really.

I too like Messenger, and use 4.79 for the default Mail program and have 6.2.1 for browsing only. I'll be happy to see a stable Mail component for Netscape 6 in the not too distant future.

Thanks, I will keep all that in mind.

Also, I sure like your Netscape pages, a lot of good information.

    OK, I did something stupid.

I installed Communicator 4.9 and set it up for mail. I must not have registered with the exact same
name for 4.9 didn't show my mail at 6.2.

I removed my name from the mail on 6.2 for I didn't want my mail going to 6.2.... WOW! Messed
up, for I lost everything I had in my mail at 6.2. :(

Is there anyway to retrieve the lost mail folders? I looked at the mail folder but didn't see anything
about user name... XP is soooo different than my old W-95.

BTW, it sure is good to get back to 4.9 and it's mail!
I like to keep 6.2 for the Composer has HTML. :D

    Hi arkie,

Never stupid, that is a non word here!

No, your 6.2.1 Profile is not automatically transfered to 4.79. Netscape 6 is a separate entity from Communicator. It only works in reverse. My hope is that you followed the "Netscape Golden Rule" and that is to make a back up of your 6.2.1 Users Profile?

When you say that you deleted your name from 6.2.1, do you mean your ~\xxxxxxxx.slt folder? If you did that, then your mail is gone..... unless the folder might still be in your Recycle Bin??

If you do retrieve the folder:

The mail folders (the ones with no extenstions) are the same format in both programs, and may be directly copied from one mail directory to the other, in Windows Explorer.

Let us know if you have more questions.

You might also check out this small page I have on Browser Preventive Maintenance. It might save you some more grief. ;)

Thanks, I was afraid that was going to be your answer.

No big deal, just some old mail that probably needed deleting.

Just had a play with this too.

After pointing the nsnotify settings to netscape, it complained that it couldn't find netscape.exe

So I made a copy of netscp6.exe, renamed it to netscape.exe and copied it back to netscape 6 folder. When I select from nsnotify popup box run mail, it opened Mail. However, when checking for mail, it's a no-no because there are no mail server settings in Messenger. That's the key, it needs Messenger and not Mail.

Hate to add to this old post but.... :)

I started having problems with Communicator 4.9 Mail Notification. Sometime it hangs and causes my CPU Usage to go to 100%.

I shut it down in XP Windows Task Manager.. then restart and it's ok until next time.

Anyone have a suggestion for a fix?
