Only one solution to your problem - install antivirus software, update the virus definitions at least once a week, preferably automatically. Otherwise you are living dangerously. Try AVG

Also install a firewall such as Kerio

    Both are freeware

You might be confusing viruses with spyware. Although they have similarities, the purpose of spyware isn't to damage your computer, it's to gather information for marketing purposes.

However, if you don't want to collect temp files, you can curtail it by going into Internet Explorer>Tools>Internet Options>Settings button and set the cache size to 1 (the lowest). Click OK.

    Yes.
This is hard coded into IE, the files are written to the drive to speed up your browsing experience, for such as when you go back to the previous page from the website. Jpg, Bmp and Gif files are just images. An html file is the webpage.

You sound like you would be interested in the IESpyad.zip file. It will put a bunch of sites know as spyware sites into the Restricted Zone of IE, preventing a bunch of cookies and other undesirable items from happening. Follow the instructions concerning changing the Restricted Zone setting. Control Panel\Internet Options, click on Security tab, click on the Restricted icon, click on Custom Settings, go down the line and set to Disable or High everthing there, password to Prompt.
