There isn't a DOS mode in Windows 2000 as unlike Windows 95,98 and ME it isn't based on DOS.
The closest you can get is the recovery console, but that isn't suitable for what you want to do.

Are you replacing a file that already existing in \windows\system? Usually you can copy the file across, reboot and it can be used.
You aren't trying to install a Windows 9x application on to a Windows 2000 machine?

A little more information on the file and why you think you need to copy it across in DOS mode would be interesting as I am intrigued.

    Simon.

    Hi Rose

Simon gave good advice and I too would like to hear the details of what you are trying to do.

If per chance you installed 2K on Fat32 you can use any win98 bootable disk and have DOS access.

If you are not sure about the file system, in My Computer rt click the drive and get properties and it will be either NTFS or FAT32.

Another option is to restart Windows and when you see the message to select the operating system to start, press F8. Use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

    Re: Windows 2000/Dos

    To: Simon and Mike,

I'll try to make a long story short - I installed CleanSweep and after it installed it said it wasn't compatible with Win 2000. I did get it deleted but it messed up Explorer and I keep getting errors and Explorer crashes. Symantec says to download the file (aditrap.dll) on their site, go to DOS and copy it to Windows System. I tried just copying it but a message says I can't do that because Windows is using it.

Hope this is clear to you what I'm trying to tell you.

To see more of this problem search for my name (Rose) and you'll see where I've sent in previous questions.

    Oh!

Rose you never said if you had NTFS or FAT32 file system.

If fat32 use a 98 boot floppy to boot to dos command prompt!

Or hit F8 while booting 2K and choose safe mode this may allow you to replace the file.

Most likely a full reinstall if IE will also fix the IE problem anyway!

    DOS

    Mike,

The answer to your question is fat32.

So you think if I download IE Ver. 6 it will reinstall it and it will probably work? There is no way to delete it first, is there?

    Rose, Rose, Rose!

I say this with a smile!!

Read my last 2 messages! In both I told you that "IF" you had FAT32 you can boot from a Win98 boot floppy and delete this file.

I believe that replacing this file as they directed is not the answer and will change nothing. But will hurt nothing to try. I checked my own systems here at home, win2k, win98 and XP and none of them have this file. This is not a normal windows file. Neither could I find a reference to it in a web search.

Yes! I think reinstalling IE will fix your problem.

Are you sure this file is not in c:\windows\system32?

Use a win98 boot floppy to boot to a:\

then right there, from a:\, type each line below and hit enter at end of each.

    c:\windows\system32\attrib c:\windows\system\aditrap.dll -s -h -r

NOTE: if file is really in system32 then make sure to change the above and below to say c:\windows\system32\aditrap.dll

    del c:\windows\system\aditrap.dll

then copy the new file back to the same location.

    Remove the floppy and reboot.

If same problem then reinstall IE!

    No more DOS problems

    To Mike:

I took your advice and deleted the file using my Win98 startup disk and everything seems to be working fine.

Thank you so much for your help and patience.

Thanks also to others who offered help.
