I was messing about with hiding icons, and made some changes to the registry.

I have now lost the Start/Settings/Control Panel, Printers, and Network & Dial-up connections icons.

Can anyone point me in the right direction in the registry to restore them?

    Thanks

Was it from any changes you made based on This thread?

If so, do you know what, exactly, you did that caused them to go missing?

    Hello Newt,

The machine in question is a different machine and is used by a colleague. When I was trying to hide icons on one machine, I think he was trying registry hacks just to help me out with some ideas, so it's really his fault, not mine.

He has no idea what it was he did, but I think that if I can find the correct CLSID numbers of the missing icons, I would be able to track down the correct place in the registry to fix the problem.

    Thanks

    Ouch.

Have you tried start~run~sfc /scannow ? May not help but would certainly be worth a shot. Or did you possibly (hopefully) make an ERD before the reg hacking?

Otherwise I really don't know any specifics to suggest other than reloading the OS over the existing one while holding your fingers crossed. I can spell CLSID but that's about the extent of my knowledge on them.

Maybe someone else will have better ideas.

Newt, Thanks for the reply. I will try scannow when I get back into work on monday.

I dont have an ERD for the machine in question as we generally rebuild all our workstations from a ghost image anyway and that is usually quicker. That is ok for secretary's machines etc, but not for our IT machines which do alot of development work.

If I can get this fixed, I will make sure I do an ERD.

I have found the relevant CLSID numbers, but I dont know enough about them to know what to do. I think they may be referenced elsewhere in the registry and just disabled or whatever.

I have determined that the problem lies with the user profile so will be in the hkey current user portion of the registry. Is there a utility that will do a "registry compare" so perhaps I could compare it with a good version?

    Thanks

If you just have the one user profile corrupted, probably easier to delete it and create a new one.
