    Hi,

I'm using Windows XP with my IBM Thinkpad 600 and when I go to the start menu and click "turn off computer," I get the "shut down" and "restart" options, but the "standby" button is faded and I'm unable to press it. My computer is able hibernate. Also -- I don't know if this means anything or not -- when hibernation is enabled I'm not able to see a standby button at all on the shut down menu. The only way I'm seeing it now is because I disabled hibernation.

I searched for answers to this question on the board and found the post where someone had a similar-sounding question. The reply said to visit

for possible solutions. I did that, but I didn't find my problem listed there.

A hearty and heart-felt thank you to whoever takes the time to respond!

There is a BIOS update for the 600 dated 10/12/2001 that was needed to make Win2K function properly on that system. Also needed for XP I imagine. Take a look Here.

    Thanks for the help.

I actually already have that version of the BIOS, but just to be safe I went ahead and downloaded it and installed it again. I still have the problem. Can you think of anything else that might cause it? I think I read somewhere about Windows 98 having this problem because of a registry error or something....would it be similar for XP?

I'm groping here but have you checked your event logs for errors/warnings that appear to be related to the problem? Something may be there that will point you toward the exact issue and maybe a solution.

If not, post back and we can go a'searching for more ideas.
