There probably is a post some where, but I cant seem to find it (search criteria...:( )

We have a wireless connection to a building where the computer is XP Pro. We would like to add another computer in that building. Instead of installing a hub/switch, I would like to add a 2nd NIC to the XP Pro and connect the computers via a crossover cable.

My question is, will the 2nd PC require an IP address like all the other computers on the network? ...or does the 2nd NIC in the XP pc only require the IP address? ...or do both 2nd NIC and the Win98 NIC require an IP address.

The reason I ask this is because there are some files shared on the XP Pro pc and also a couple of other PC' on the network that the Win98 pc has to access.

The way "I" believe it needs to be is the 2nd NIC needs an IP address (192.168.210.2) and so does the Win98 NIC (192.168.210.3). The origianal NIC in the XP Pro has 192.168.210.1. I then would have to set up Internet connection sharring on the XP pro inorder for the Win98 to have access out of that NIC that is connected to the wireless network.

Am I on the right track?

    Thanks a lot :D

    Nick

Both new NICs will require an unique IP address to communicate back and forth to each other. However, the last PC will not be able to talk to the rest of the other network or even browse the Internet unless your XP Pro can do routing to the other networks off of its NIC.

If you are going wireless to that PC already, why not just add another wireless card to the 2nd PC... that way it will become a part of the network by way of wireless?

Also, running a cable from one PC to the next, you might as well just go out to Office Depot, Best Buy or CompUSA and grab a cheap hub. It may make your life so much easier.

Another guy in my department took a stab at this today and got it working. Put a 2nd NIC in the XP pro, connected a crossover to the 98se pc and it works fine. The 98se pc has a unique IP address then the rest of the network (192.168.0.XXX instead of 192.168.210.XXX). The 98se can browse the entire network, but other network pc's can browse to it...which is fine.

As for another wireless setup to that pc, it is an unique circumstance. In the XP pro, we have a Cisco NIC with a long (15ft or so) antenna cable that is mounted outside a building. The access point is about 1/2 mile away. The connection to the building works, but is slow. We are getting a directional antenna to help the signal out. To buy more equipment is out of the question... To buy a hub, you still need to put a 2nd NIC in and then you are running into the same type of problem (i think anyways).

Anyways, got a solution. I just wanted to ask the question and see if the theary was right....was close :)

    Thanks again.

    Nick
