I'm trying to help a friend who has a very outdated system, so outdated in fact that he has IE 3.1!!! He's running W98 and needs to update to IE 5 so I can run Symentec's online virus scan (it requires IE5) Is it possible to download IE 5?

    All versions of IE
If you went to the Windows Update Site, you would find that M$ recommends going to IE6 SP1, but 3.01 I do not think would support the site's ActiveX controls.
I am very curious as to how 3.01 would be on a 98 system, as that version is a hold over from Windows 3.1, and the install of 98 should have put on 5.

Welshjim, I was successful in loading IE 5 on my friend's pc.
    I didn't go for IE6 because when I was running W98
I downloaded IE6 and it totally ******* up my pc. Tomorrow when I go to work with him, I will download all the appropriate Windows updates.

IE6 did cause some problems, that is why there is IE6 SP1 available, they fixed it.

I successfully installed IE 5 yesterday and ran the Norton online scan. Only 2 virus were identified. - WM.NiceDay and W97M.Thus.A - both are 'document' viruses. I can't believe that's all the virus on this system as there has never been any kind of antivirus program installed. Today I'll load NAV, update it and run a complete system scan to see what comes up. In the meantime, how do I get rid of the two 'document' viruses? Norton has no removal tool or instructions for removing them.

Update on the problem I've been dealing with. Today I installed NAV, updated it and did a complete system scan. Imagine my surprise when only the same 2 viruses came up - Nice Day and Thus.A . NAV did not remove them, so I deleted the infected files and hope future scans won't find them.
