    Trying to help my neighbor who has a Windows ME problem. Seems he downloaded a 'game', played, shut-down, and on next start-up he got a message that said "unable to locate VMM32.VXD file. System won't boot. I put in the HP system recovery disc 1 of 3, and it stops at a DOS prompt. Looks like a bunch of zip files didn't open. Any ideas what to try next???

    What I know of problems with VMM32.VXD is nada
    except they are hard to fix,,
    Relax dont get in a hurry and wait for someone here who know how to solve the problem.

    If you just want to go ahead and do the over the top install of windows me with the HP cds thats easy

    shut down if not already gee :) startup and press F1
    will get you to the hp bios,, if not press and hold any KEY
    youl get the stuck key message and an option to enter bios
    then you have to find in there the options to have it check the cd first when booting exit and save with cd 1 in machine

    That should do it.. PS ive never yet had to :)
    Rather than all that I would have booted into safe mode
    You can do that by taping the crlt key at the appropriate time when booting (sometime the F8 key) then choose safe mode
    and try to diagnose problem.
    let us know ?
    PS if you can get to safe mode you might consider using system restore

    Update on last post - neighbor impatient and took his tower (HP ) to a local PC shop. They said he needs a new Hard Drive and re-install the system. Nothing I can do now as far as an in-home remedy. It's out of my hands. Thanks, Lonny, for your input. Ken
