here comes a pain!

hi guys again huhhffff!!!!!! k you i m using win98 i got a problem when i reset a computer when i come in windows desktop so all icons and on desktop and as well startup programme icons showing blank i thougth may be virus attacked so i checked from virus no trojan addwaree and try to repair registry but no result
when i start computer some time when i come in startup nothing happen just illegar operation i got headache what i going i try backup also nothing happen so i don't want to format computer i want to repair so i have need hopefully you guys help me so what i have to do
computer icons not showing but programmes internet and everything is working without icon just showing the names only
so what's this any one any idea???

 

Open Regedit and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

There might (or might not!) be a MaxCachedIcons entry in the right-hand pane. If it already exists, right-click on it, select Modify and insert 1000 in the Value Data field. If the entry does not exist, create it (right-click in the right-hand pane, select New - String Value, rename the New Value to MaxCachedIcons, then right-click on this entry and select Modify and insert 1000 in the Value Data field.

Next, find and delete the shelliconcache folder which lives in C:\WINDOWS (it's a System File - to see it you'll have to open Windows Explorer, click View - Folder Options - View and check the option to Show All Files). The file will be recreated on the next boot.

after that i tried to find in windows shelliconcache folder but i didn't find 1st i already enable to shows system files and folder and tried to search as well but nothing. then after i reset computer but i was still not doubt that it won't be recover and it's true now still same in condition scare to see my computer in this condition ....any solid method to resolve this one
it's like nothing icon on desktop and and also in startup programme no icon just only text showing during browsing when i see the option of back,forward,stop it's like black square spots

so worry what's this.....

here come what i did i tried to find folder again i got i just delete this folder acording my knowlege this icon builder folder after deleting this folder computer rebuild icon and it did thanx and will u tell me about information about shelliconcache.
but it's not finish of war here come again ........................................................

oops! brett i was so excited that i solved my problem here what happened i just shutdown computer and reset same thing icon blank then again i try and reset it's work but when i shutdown and reset same then again i find and delete so why this happening what's the solution

The shelliconcache is a hidden file.
Go here and download TweakUI. Double click the downloaded file, it is an self extracting file, note where it extracts to. Go to that folder and right on Tweakui.Inf and select Install. When installing it will go through a little help sequence explaining itself. When that is done, go into Control Panel, you will find it there. Open it and click on the Repair tab. You will see Rebuild Icons already selected, just click on Repair Now.

 

tweak installing problem

okey i tried to install tweakui but it shows erros ;_
the disk label tweakui now is required.
this disk is provide by ur computer manufacture.
click okey no continoe then install stop and ask path for tweakiu files to complete install i tried to give path tweakiu.ini but nothing.. and other i got problem last time i can see all icon in windows safe mood but now safee also not coming by pressing f8 and another way of hold shift key so what's u say how to resolve this problem thanx a lot still i m in problem

A few ideas:
1. Have you installed the Video Driver?

2. Some moitors come with a CD. Generally his is not needed (PnP monitor works fine), but perhaps yours actually needs specific monitor drivers.

3. At the F8 menu, select command prompt only, and then have a look at your autoexec.bat and config.sys files (just type "edit" and the repective filename, should be in Root directory.

4. Try just re-installing Windows. Amazing how much that'll fix.

If all else fails, I advise kidnapping GoB and get him to fix it!

k i have installed some time work and some time not

i have installed tweakui and i tried to rebuild icon after reset it worked but after few mints i again start it's again showing blank so it means some times it works and some times it's not usually it effect after reseting so what's this the desktop icon is some time okey but start icon and explorer and icon still showing black square spots not looking nice how to repair that one as well what's the reason some time after reset computer icon showing blank and some time is okey.

I also think these two threads should be merged. There are several factors in play here.
Possible Trojan was mentioned.
Norton and Macaffee are installed onto the same machine. They generally do not play well together.
":-incompatible version of the RPC stub." is an indication of a case of versionitis.
A problem installing TweakUI, can be an indication of a corrupt registry, possibly confirmed by above mentioned versionitis.
Wrong icons being display or not displayed at all, Explorer.Exe seems to be corrupted by evidence of blank Start button.
My overall recommendation is this.
Uninstall Norton, reboot, uninstall Macaffee products, reboot. Get Regcleaner, on the opening screen, remove all Norton, Symnatec, Macaffee and Network Associates entries, then go to the Toolbar at Tools\Registry Cleaner\Do Them All, remove all bad entries found.
Then do the following links.
Housecall, online AV scan
Online Trojan Scan
Then create a new Bootdisk's, get the one for 98SE OEM. Double click the downloaded file with a floppy in the drive, it will be created for you. Boot up computer with it, selecting CD Rom Support. Watch the screen for the drive letter for the CD Rom, it will not be the usual letter.
Type the following at the prompt;
ren c:\windows\explorer.exe explorer.old <press enter>
ren c:\windows\system\oleaut32.dll oleaut32.old <press enter>
X:\win98\setup <press enter> X being the drive letter for the CD
You will be installing Windows on top of itself, this is not formatting, just an overlay install and should repair things nicely.
There are too many little things to tackle any other way.
Go to Windows Update site.

 

uhhhh! finaly i lost windows

i applied all these commands

when i was using this down command for backup i failed to back actualy i don't have cd rom and i have backup of win98 i was trying that but luckly las time one window files renames i didn't remind that during backup it's shows erros and i was in trouble and can';t get back previous verision
X:\win98\setup <press enter> X being the drive letter for the CD
then i borrow cd rom from my friend then i did clean instalation this i didn't recover badluck huffffff
