Hey folks - there seems to be a lot going on I don't understand
(and I not sure I like it)!

I'm viewing a web page online - or i'm checking out stuff on E Bay
(online) or whatever - I'm up and running online.

Now, I got Norton AntiVirus installed and right in the middle of all my internet surfing I begin to get a popup message from the Norton program that says:
    "Checking your outgoing mail ".
Same as it does when I really do send email out.

However, I'm not doing email - so, folks - why am I all of a sudden sending out messages every few seconds?
(I stop and go to email phase - I have no "sent" files!)

    Thanks

    Got your suggestions -

Already had a good firewall (software & hardware)- But:

I did all the other stuff - ran new virus check -found none.
Ran spyware check - found lots - got rid of all but one.
Ran trogan horse check - got two - and removed them.

So far, I'm not sending out any mystery emails anymore.

    Thanks a much !

Good to hear that you got cleaned up.
I would take a good look at how your firewall is setup. While it may be stopping unsolicited inbound, you had bad outbound soliciting bad inbound traffic on a port easily opened by apparently anything on your system.
Go here and get the Leaktest to test your firewall's outbound blocking. This page will test for open, closed or stealthed ports.
