    Hi,
I was helping a friend of mine work on his computer today and when we click the Start Button - All Programs, his list of t;he programs installed on his computer has 3 columns but the third column cannot be see to really tell what the program is. We tried right clicking Start-Properties-StartMenu-Customize and changed the bullet to the small icons but it didn't do any good .

How can he get all the programs to show in his window. He also gets that annoying box that pops up when he clicks the start button "Some programs cannot be shown. Make Small icons. " but it doesn't say how to make the words smaller so he can see the entire list.

    Thanks for your help.

You could reduce the number of folders by consolidating programs. For example, create folders by manufacturer, purpose, etc.

Have one named Microsoft and move all the M/S programs into it. Then repeat this for Photographic Software, CD Burning, Games.

It's only limited by your imagination.

In your Display Properties click on Appearance, then Advanced. The Start Menu is under "Selected Items ". Reduce the font size to 9 and you will see all columns.

    Barbara-Ann,

I did go into the Display Properties and clicked on Appearance, then Advanced. There is no "Start Menu" item under "Selected Items" so I can change it to 9.

Do you know anywhere else that it could be?

BurrWalnut Yes, as the last resort I will explain to him how to move programs into new folders, etc. but I first wanted it to be an easy fix for him as he is new to the computer.

Any other help will be great.

You can also right click on the name, select rename and shorten the name.

You can also create new folders and Drag-N-Drop related things in it. Making less folder to be Viewed.

Selected Items includes the Start Menu as well as ....

Selected Items are desktop icon text, Start Menu, icon text, and the drop down menu text background. When you click on "File" and mouse over the "Print" option, the text will have a blue bar over it. This is the menu text background. The default size is 18-21. The default color is dark blue. The default font is Ariel (Western) or Microsoft Sans Serif. The size is 8-12 and the color is white.

    Hi again,
Are you sure you aren't talking about a Windows 98 machine. I have an XP and believe me I do not have anything like you described in your earlier post.

I did find on my XP machine, that if I right-click the start menu, go to properties, click the start menu tab. I have two selections, the first one says "Start Menu ". If I click customize, it gives me option to change the icon size for programs to Large or Small icons.

If I bullet the "Classic Start Menu" and click Customize, I can check or uncheck the options in the "Advanced Start Menu options" white box. I did check the box, "Show Small Icons in Start Menu. "

I think my friend is using the Wiindows XP start menu and not the Classic so I guess the only option he has is to change the icon size for programs to Large or Small icons.

Thanks for all the help. I think this may help him too.
