I have a 2000 Pro gateway. If I try and install a remote pc client (from a site), the only connection that can be made over the internet is to the gateway - None of the other PCs. They are all running on different ports, and I use a hub.

I'd like to know why I can't set my true internet IP as the ip on the other workstations.

    Sorry if I'm rather vague...

I think I follow what you are trying to do. However please correct me if I have made some wrong assumptions as you haven't provided much information.

Your Internet Service Provider will only give you one "real" IP address. That is what you will use on your gateway. All other machines behind that gateway machine will have to have "unregistered" IP addresses. This will include the gateway machine.

The gateway machine will need to have two network cards, one to connect to the Internet and one to connect to the Internal network.

The gateway machine will act as a router, to route traffic from the internal machines out to the Internet.
However what would be a better solution would be to get a DSL/Cable router from someone like Linksys, Dlink, Netgear etc. This is connected to the Internet and all the machines connect to this one device. In the device configuration you would set different ports to go to different machines on the Internal LAN.

However, if your ISP has given you multiple "real" IP addresses, then you will need a real router and we go far beyond the scope of this forum.

    Hope this helps,
    Simon.

    Good post Simon

quackbal if you would tell us what program you are using it would help.

If you can make the connection to the gateway machine there are ways to do this.

If using pcanywhere or VNC all you need do is install and set up pcaw or VNC on the desktop of the gateway machine to connect to any other of the lan stations and install PCAW or VNC hosts on all stations on the LAN you want to takeover.

I use pcaw to connect to a gateway machine then I run another PCAW icon on the gateway machine that can connect to any other that I have set up. Or use PCAW to run the VNC!

This way only 1 IP (the gateway) is nessesary.

Give us more details or get more details on the above if you don't fully understand.

    Mike
