Trying to run a domain for learning reasons. I have a Windows 2000 Server with AD running. 1 XP Pro Workstation and 2 Windows 2000 workstations.

I have AD running, and the computers have joined the domain, but it takes ages to log on; if I attempt to logon to the domain, it can take around 5 minutes to give me the desktop.

    I'm going to start again.
What domain name should I use if it is not internet based? IE is it supposed to end with .local? This is NOT my area of expertise.

    Help would be appreciated.

Check your DNS servers on the client machines.
They should be pointed at the Domain Controller ONLY.
Similarly the domain controller should be pointing at itself for DNS lookups. Windows 2000 Server will then use its built in DNS tools to look up DNS information off the Internet.

    Simon.
